Draw your own conclusions...I just found the info below interesting.

WSJ: Canon Takes Camera Market Lead From Kodak In 4Q
By William M. Bulkeley Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (Dow Jones)--Canon Inc. (CAJ), surpassed Eastman Kodak Co. (EK) for the digital-camera-market lead in the U.S. during the fourth quarter, according to market researcher IDC.
The number of units shipped in the quarter dropped for the first time since digital cameras came on the scene. Unit shipments fell 3% to 12.1 million cameras in the quarter compared to 12.4 million the year before.
"Demand has definitely cooled," said Christopher Chute, IDC's photography analyst.
IDC said that Canon shipped 2.5 million cameras in the quarter, just ahead of Kodak with 2.4 million and Sony Corp. (SNE) with 2.2 million. Kodak said earlier this year that it was willing to lose share in order to improve profitability.
IDC said that for the full year, digital camera shipments rose 5% to 29.8 million units. Canon had 20% of the market, Sony 17% and Kodak 16%, IDC said.
Canon shares recently rose 19 cents to $53 while those of Kodak rose 2.1% to $26.40.

No mention of Nikon? Weird. I always thought they were a big player. |

I read that earlier today. It is odd that it doesn't even mention the largest camera supplier in the world these days, that would tend to help explain the slow-down.
As for Nikon, last figures I saw were about 14% of the market.

Nikon at the moment is a big player in the dSLR market, bigger then Canon even. But their P&S range sucks and that's where Canon, Sony and Kodak rule.

Canon has been outselling Nikon in the dSLR two to one until the last 6 moonths - the D40, D80 and D200 are popular, the D40 moving a lot of units. Canon's least expensive 400XTi is a couple of hundred more than the D40 in price, and to get a weather sealed body from canon you have to get a 1D at about twice the price of the D200.
Overall Canon is a larger company - they sell more than just Cameras.
Hopefully Canon will have some exciting products at PMA - the 30D wasm't much of an upgrade over the 20D and it has hurt their sales.

For the record, Nikon makes medical/research equipment as well. |

Says who? I have been looking for real data and the only market data I can find costs $3500.00. Until I see hard real data it is conjecture. |

The implication of the line was that Canon is a larger company because they sell more than just cameras. I was merely responding that Nikon also sells more than just cameras. |

Agreed, none of the major "camera" companies sell only cameras, good input. |

I believe that their medical optics division is bigger than the camera/lens division. Nikon also makes the lenses that are used for creating (sensor) wafers. So the Sony sensors that go into Nikon cameras are created with Nikon optical products. Wouldn't even surprise me if Canon uses them too.
