Select the adjustment layer in the Layers pallette, then change to the Channels pallette -- the "mask" is an additional grayscale channel.

Hi,

I don't have Photoshop 4, but can tell you where it is on CS - do you have your layers box open? Go to Window on top menu bar scroll down and select layers - when the box opens, on my version (CS) down the very bottom of the box are icons, the second from the left is a shaded rectangle with a white circle inside it that's what you're looking for.

Alternatively if on the top menu you select Layers, scroll down and it should say as a highlighted option, 'Add Layer Mask).

Hope this helps until someone else with your version comes along!

If you are referring to Photoshop Elements 4.0 --- it doesn't do layer masks, need the full version of Photoshop for that.

SkyNevada,

If you go to: //www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/photoshop-elements-curves.html you'll find a handy set of effects/actions that work in all versions of Photoshop Elements and includes Layer Mask. Only problem is they are one-time use per application to an image. In other words, once you apply the mask, you can't reopen it later and make adjustments.

Anyway, you'll figure it out. It's not hard and it's what I use with my Elements 2.0

Actually I'm not sure the Earthbound Light page has a version for Elements 4. It is, however, possible.

Tip to Claya - if you click on "Automatically Parse URLs" under the post entry box, you'll see your links actually turn into links in your post.
