When I typically come to the site, I open the challenge results, and, using Firefox, I open several photographs in other tabs...to see the larger images. I used to be able to browse the site and see many pictures, not only from challenges, but from the galleries as well.

In the past few weeks I've noticed that when I try to open more than two simultaneous images, the browser just keeps on "Loading..." the images and after a few minutes, it shows a connectivity error. So, I usually wait 10-15 minutes, and try again; only to be able to open another two images.

This is getting on my nerves, and I'm not sure if I'm the only one experiencing this problem, or if this is some sort of "protection" from the webmasters trying to limit how many images we can see every 15-minutes. Is there such a thing, or should I be able to open as many images at once?

If it is my browser, is there anything I can do to circumvent this annoyance?

Thanks,
Manlio

It's not the site. Google analytics takes its sweet time occasionally but it doesn't cause a load error. Firefox is fairly well known for tossing up load error messages at the drop of a hat. You could try a different browser.

Never heard of Firefox 'tossing up load error messages.' never had the problem either.

There are settings in the config file that will allow Firefox to handle the multiple requests better:

network.http.max-connections = 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server = 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy = 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server = 8
network.http.pipelining = true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests = 30
network.http.proxy.pipelining = true
nglayout.initialpaint.delay = 0 (this one you have to add to the file)

Just one site with description

I've been experiencing the same problem in IE7 tabbed browsing, so maybe it's not just Firefox.

I've noticed something along these lines too.
If say I am viewing challenge results showing full results, the recently commented on page or in a voting page, where there may be a large number of thumbnails loading, clicking on a thumbnail before that page finishes loading causes the new tab ((or window in some cases) to just hang forever, having to close it and try again.
Seems the page of thumbnails needs to finish loading first.
Even with a pretty decent DSL connection, I get impatient ;)

Now if the site can open something before I click it, then I'll be really happy...

Use the right browser and set it up right and it will do that for you...

E.g., Firefox with the fasterfox plug-in

I'm using Firefox 2.0 and not having that issue. I did originally set up 1.5 with Fasterfox, so that may be why. I do notice that, as Brad pointed out, a new tab with an individual photo, spawned from a still-loading "full results" page does display the icon in the tab indicating "still loading" but as far as I can see, the page has loaded. It seems that the icon doesn't disappear until the parent page finishes loading.

Prefetching and background cache & link loading is one thing, but when I see a link, and think about clicking it, the site's mind-reading script kicks in and does it just before I click the link.
:P

Ohhh - you're right! The 2.0 seems to have resolved that.
I haven't tried since the update, as I got used to not being able to.
Cool!

Ah, you need the BoobieFox plug-in.

So I tried updating the about:config with CEJ's remarks. But that still doesn't solve the problem. I can browse around the forums fine. It's when I get to any challenge and try to open multiple photos in multiple tabs. Once I open the third or fourth tab, the rest just hang up and I get the "Loading..." message for a long time. Once that happens, I can't do anything else on the site. I can't reload the front page, read forums, etc...I basically have to go do something else, and then come back after 15-20 minutes for everything to work fine...that is until I open multiple photographs from a challenge result...

Any other possibilities?

Slippy might be able to lend you a known good router. ;-)

Seriously, are you running any type of personal firewall software on your computer? Do you still have the problem if you disable it?

I've also been working on optimizing the Internet (which I host on my PC). I haven't rebooted the Internet for a while, and the Internet is down to about 20% free space, which I'll have to take care of pretty soon, as the Internet is gaining in general popularity.

No thanks necessary. :-)

Are you running XP? Look in the event viewer and see if you are getting errors like this: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts

I checked out the Event Viewer for the Internet (hosted on drive G of my PC) and see you've been spending too much time surfing porn, routerguy!

turns out I didn't have a firewall on. And the Event Viewer didn't really shed any information.

So, after I click on the 4th image and Firefox sits there "Loading..." this is the message I get:

-----------------------------------------------------------
Problem Report: There was a communication problem.
Message ID: TCP_ERROR
Problem Description: The system was unable to communicate with the server.
Possible Problem Cause
* The Web server may be down.
* The Web server may be too busy.
* The Web server may be experiencing other problems, preventing it from responding to clients.
* The communication path may be experiencing problems.

Possible Solution: Try connecting to this server later.
-----------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure what else to try...and I find it incredibly annoying to only be able to see two or three photos every 20 minutes...argh...

I can't duplicate this with any version of Firefox (or IE) however I did a reghack that got rid of the xp inbound tcp connections limit way back when as it was causing me similiar problems. Good luck.

I spammed your log just to spice things up. The reality of the situation is that you, DPC, and the rest of the universe are putzing along pleasantly oblivious to the fact that you exist only as virtual machine 7 here in my office.

So YOU'RE the guy I'm watching on that reality show! I think I feel the universe looping in on itself, yikes!

Yesterday I was having this problem where the DPC site would throw up a timeout error during voting (after about 15 images) using Firefox v2. I thereafter could not get anything more from that connection, so I had to close the browser, wait a few mins and then re-open. I had exactly the same problem with IE7 so it is not the browser.

I also tested other websites, and this problem did not happen. So my conclusion is that the DPC servers are getting swamped with too many simultaneous requests and cannot keep up. The site owners are going to have to add more grunt to the site hardware, as I gave up voting pretty quickly after running into that problem yesterday - 1 to 2 hours voting was lost.

I have Win XP running a DSL router.

According to mk, the increased popularity of this site will be short-lived, so there's no need to add extra grunt. Typical chick. ;-P

Oh really. In which universe does she live? Or in which oven? Look at the numbers of submissions on the increased number of challenges per week even.

I agree with mk. It's just a fluke. Nothing to see here, folks. Go back to your news sites and online shopping. Nothing to see here. ;)

That's it. I'm taking my routers and going home.

The repercussions of opinions contrary to Slippy's are inveterate, and certain to come back and bite you in the bum-bum!
