Meet Art... he couldn't get out of the box, so he burned it down, which started an obsession. He's our village burner, I hear he's thinking about expanding his services to metropolitan areas.

New rule: Canadians must not use baseball analogies unless they have a team in their province (i.e. Ontario). They must use hockey analogies instead.
Or is that too inside he box? ;) |

I guess this debate is not limited to DPC but to any form of "art" anywhere. There is always going to be "popular" art and "out-of-the-box" art. And as the name suggests, "popular art" is going to be popular :)
I believe the true artist* creates for himself and no one else, in which case it should not matter if out-of-box is appreciated or not! BUT if you are creating art for sake of others (like for voting on DPC), than you are anyway limiting your creativity to the box (of likes). There are people on DPC("many"...if not all) who appreciate out-of-box stuff and this is normally visible from their comments, and not really from the votes which comes from more diversified group.
* "Is photography an art?" is another topic which has been discussed to lengths :)

Hey!! We have triple A ball here. Do I know the team name? Of course not. Watching baseball is like watching grass grow, or maybe that's golf. ;o) |

Right, ok, you made my case for me. hehe However if Canada still plays football I'll allow Canadian Football references. ;) |

I only follow real football and they only play that everywhere in the world other than North America. ;o)
edit: though Canadian football is more real than Amirican Football (bad spelling intended) :oP

I am Art. I have no box and I have no hair to let down. You'd think I would do well here. If only EVERYONE would think like me. If only EVERYONE would have my same tastes and sense of what is truly creative.
I don't know why - considering how frequently they are brought up - but these discussions really depress me. I don't know why people don't get that the box IS the mass pleaser and the way to place highly in challenges is to please the masses - that is how the system is setup. And if all you saw on the front page were out-of-the-box shots - they wouldn't exactly be out of the box, would they? Occasionally an OOB image does please the masses and why? Because it first has all of the basic elements of a mass-pleasing image AND it was probably out-of-the-box without being "out in left field" as someone mentioned.
If you want to shoot unique interpretations, you should do so - and appreciate the positive comments and feedback you get from a minority of voters who appreciate it and don't whine about the majority of voters who likely don't.
I also agree with Leroy that the term "out of the box" is the most overused, and I'll add: subjective phrase on DPC. It should be burned to the ground and it's ashes spread across a field of tulips and butterflies at sunset. :) |

"Out of the box"
I HATE THAT PHRASE!!
AAAAARGH!
I try to avoid cliches at times and it's always good to find something new. Not easy in photography!Saying that cliches wouldnt be cliched if they didnt have content.
Just enjoy yourself and dont take it all so seriously!
I'm going back to my box now

Why do so many people use the phrase anyways?
So how come you think outside the box is not a term used here at dpc?
I have seen a lot of creative, original, blow you away photographs here.
Are photographers here at dpc really that lonely, deprived of social life, as well as keep to themselves so much that inside the box stirs them out?
I think I would rather be beside the box, because then I will be far more equal to myself, as well as fair and balanced when it comes to my creations.
Sometimes when you look at the beginner swimmer, doggy paddling or trying to figure out if swimming is for them because it is no longer relaxing in water it is a lot like work then you start to see where the potentials are because the hard work pays off to become a olympic, relay, award winning, swimmer.
Perhaps creativity can be found where imagination and playtime is.
Theres no wrong in thinking about the location of where you are to a box.
There are so many that differ with size, shape, color, content, texture, quality, emotions, ect...
The dpcers that are winning ribbons or earning high scores with more of their images listed as favorites are just leaders, they have been here and done it, setting the standard to what voters like.
The rest of dpc with the least amount of ribbons are following their own good winning stuff.. In times of developing ones self worth and morals then the winners with new original style comes out in the end paying off what the box didnt do..
Think outside the box is only a phrase anyways that was proved by many testing its better to really think inside the box.
Who wants to be in a box anyways?
I don't see any boxes here accept this space I am typing my crazy ideas and words in... Now really, tell me, have you looked at portfolios today instead of chatting in forums, or voting on challenges?... Cuz then if you are scavenging for new images to view you may just change your mind about the NOT!
:)
