My sister is looking to get a canon digital body so she can make the jump from film to digital while keeping her current lenses.
Her primary use will be sports (primarily college swimming) and typical family shots. She has asked if the extra money for the 30D over the 350 is worth it for her. I don't know the canon line, so I'm looking for some help here. From looking at the specs, the better burst mode and the larger LCD are plusses. Beyond that, I'm not seeing that much of a difference.
Any feedback you can provide would be great.
Thanks. |

| it really depends on how into photography she is and/or will become. the 30D is considered a pro-sumer camera, offering just enough to be considered a legitimate backup camera, while the xti is a high end consumer camera. i don't know what glass she has, but the xti might be a good place to start, and put the extra money towards better glass. bodies come and go, but glass goes on and on and on (when it's good, that is). |

FWIW, unless she is a VERY serious sports photog, I think the 350's burst rate and write speeds are more than adequate.

i agree, the 20D/30D line has a way better feel IMO. pro-sumer grade. even thoughyou see quite alot of Pros using them as there primary. If money is an issue id say hunt down a 20D, you just lose the big screen and like .5 fps from the 30D |

well you probably already know - but you didn't mention it. if it's an older film body ( FD lenses ). i would take that into account because they won't work with the EF system... a cheaper body with extra $$ for lenses would be best if that's the case.

or if she has older eyes...i have friends that bought the 30d just for the lcd, and they swear that it was more than worth the money. it all depends on the situation. |

| I have both the 300D and the 30D. The advantages of the 30D make it worth it to me (and I just do this for fun). Of course there are a lot of upgrades from the 300D to the 350, then to the 400D as well. If weight is an issue, the 30D is considerably heavier than the Rebel models. But yeah, I'd pick the 30D over the Rebel. She'll get addicted, you know, and will kick your butt if she gets the wrong camera... |

I would worry more about fast lenses. Indoor swimming arenas are traditionally dim in my experience. As far as the burst rate is concerned, if you need burst, the 350 won't cut it. If you can deal with single frames at a time, the 350 should do fine.

Thanks guys.
I'll pass on the link to this forum thread to her. I think I would lean towards the lesser camera and the better lenses, but I don't know what she already has. The larger LCD is pretty compelling though.
