Has anybody else noticed that some members never check any of the comments left to their photos as 'helpful'? I wonder why that is...any thoughts?

I never used to check any of mine as helpful. There were a few reasons. That feature was implemented after I'd been here for some time and back then, it wasn't possible to mark comments as helpful from your comments received page. It was a huge pain. Besides that, I don't really think it means anything. Some people mark thorough critiques as helpful, some mark only positive pats-on-the-back and some people mark everything.
But then I began to see that people were really offended by folks who didn't mark any comments as helpful and could only assume that they must not appreciate comments at all. That's certainly not the case so now I use it mostly as a "I've read this comment" thing. |

Yeah, I mark them mostly to show that I've read the comment and appreciate it.
It amuses me how some folk only mark them when they are completely positive. |

I mark every comment I've read by checking the 'helpful' box.
I find it helpful to know which ones I've read or not. I suppose the original commenter might read more into it than that which isn't a bad thing, bless their hearts. I do find every comment that someone takes the time out of their busy life to give me, valuable and appreciated - good or more especially bad. Like Mk said, the 'helpful' box gets used for a variety of things that don't really mean what it looks like it says.
I also have a 3 year backlog of comments that I'm never going to go back and mark 'helpful' that were made before the box existed.

as with others, i use the function both to keep track of what i've read and to say thanks for taking a moment to write something. the only reason i won't mark one helpful is if i have a petty, immature reason not to ;-)

I have a coworker who is a DPC member and he does not use / participate in the forums. He had noticed the "Comment helpful" box, but didn't think it was anything to bother with until I told him that he should check the ones he felt were helpful comments. I had to explain that box to my daughter too when she joined. I think the more casual user just doesn't understand all of the nuances that we obsessive users understand about DPC. That doesn't mean they don't like our comments! :)

I mark every comment as helpful when I see it.
The 'helpful' checkbox is the most meaningless data element collected at DPC. The most you ever learn from it is that the receiver chose to check the box, not that it had any particualar meaning to them. It is either habitually checked or habitually ignored by most people.
The 'helpful' checkbox probably should be removed. It just generates arguments from people that feel their remarks are not appreciated by others when they notice it was not marked. But the majority voted to keep it. They must be gluttons for punishment. :)

I mark almost any comment helpful that has a reason why my photo sucks. If it just says that it sucks without a reason, I don't mark it as helpful. Mind you I don't get many like that.
