there has been a lot of discussion around here about photos fitting the challenges, and the cruel things people have decided they will unleash on photos they "feel" don't fit.

well i'd just like to say that i think these people need to be careful about how quick they are to judge something as not fitting into a challenge. my recent grace submission suffered severely under the wrath of so many people who, first, would not take the time to consider the connection of a person caught in an all encompassing light as having anything to do with grace (caught in the light of grace, perhaps???), and second, upon passing this judgement, hand down their 1 or 2 as some kind of punishment, a stone cast in the hopes of crippling that person's score.

maybe i seem a little bitter, but this is less about my personal feelings concerning my placing in this challenge than it is about the way people are so quick to judge photos in this manner and my concern that it will not only affect the way decent photos place in a challenge, but also that it will discourage young, aspiring photographers from experimenting and exploring their natural creativity here for fear of such sudden and harsh judgements against their efforts.

i think if you're going to pass such a judgement on a photo you should at least have the courtesy to tell the person as much in the comment field. that way they at least have the chance to pm you and explain where they were coming from. if you still don't see the connection then you are justified in your decision, but if the matter stands on you not having the creative capacity to appreciate a vision perhaps a little outside the normal realm of your own and you didn't have the courtesy to explore this as a possibility in the manner detailed above, then all you have done is kicked sand in the face of something you didn't understand. where i come from, we call people like that bullies.

that's all.

Darcy...the average of what you give is very much what you got:) or do you just give out Threes and fours?

Just an observation:)

Fess up time again, I gave you a 2 and will explain why. I didn't have time to get back to it during the challenge and leave comments then so I will leave them here.

I also did not make the connection to Grace as in "the light of grace" but that is not why I gave you a 2, the shot is blown out to me, to overexposed and honestly hurt my eyes to look at it for any length of time. The expression on the person's face is not one of a person receiving grace or being enlightened by grace it comes more off as one of "Yeah, I'm here, bored as can be". The cropping did not appeal to me either, the rectangular shape and the additional white space on the right completely takes away from the rest of the shot and it honestly did not appeal to me on an overall basis. The shot has potential, less light, better expression, tighter cropping would probably have scored you much higher for me.

Hope that helps you understand where some of the low votes might be coming from

I'm surprised that you didn't get 60 ones, the photo is a unsaturated Art which has little to do with any graceful moment!

Hey, I managed to almost double your ones, and twos!

I gave your shot a five -- it didn't hurt my eyes THAT much ...

I don't mean to be harsh darcy, but it might just be that people didn't like the photo.

It isn't one or two low votes, it is a standard voting curve, but low end heavy as with an average in the 3's you don't get both extremes of a normal curve.

Sure, some of the 1's and 2's may be people voting that way ..... but a lot more than that I would venture voted on the contents of the photograph and for whatever reasons they have simply didn't like it.

People do not always like to comment when they give a low score, though it would be great if they did, and as Firstrich has commented, you are as guilty as anyone for scoring low and not leaving comments (indeed you average score given could be considered very harsh).

It doesn't seem right to critisise people en mass for not having the courtesy to comment if they vote low when you do not appear to do so yourself, and vote lower than most people I have checked, sorry.

So, try another tact with your next photo, learn and move on from this one, and all will hopefully be better next time :)

filstrich,

ok, if you want to make this about me for some reason, i'll endulge, though since the system here is set up to make who you are voting on confidential, i think it is pretty clear that this has nothing to do with personal attacks. the issue here for me is about the way people are judging photos as being challenge-worthy. but if you insist...

i may be wrong, but i believe i have yet to give out a 10, and may have given out only a couple of 9's. i'm still pretty new around here so i'm still trying to guage what is 10-worthy and am erring on the side of caution for now rather than tilting the scales around here by going 10 crazy on every picture that looks halfway decent. 7 is usually a high score for me, where 8 is amazing and 9 is mind blowing. i'm still developing my critical eye for this site, but i certainly don't dish out the 1's. i may have given as may of them as I have 9's, which isn't very many. i got more 1's on this challenge alone than i imagine i'll end up giving out in several months of challenges.

maybe my photo just plain sucked, and anyone who thinks so would be entitled to not only give it a 1 but to tell me as much in as plain language as i have used just now. but if it didn't just "suck", then to me this looks like a matter of people getting carried away with their concern for challenge worthiness - and that is the issue, if you don't mind, that i would like to continue discussing.

thanks,

darcy

You summed it all up right there yourself Darcy...believe it or not, in a theme based challenge system like we have here, the majority of the folks are sticklers for being on topic...

I went ahead and left what I felt would have been My score on your image. as well as what did not work for me.

Again Darcy just observation:) not meant as an attack.

Hey..I have been on the receiving end on some ones and twos myself...I know the feeling...dust off and go at it again!

Good luck

Your first post indicates you misunderstand the terms of the challenge. You wanted to use PM to explain how your shot fits the theme. You don't get to do that. The image with it's title are your entry; and they must speak without any further assistance. Hope you do better in the next one.
