Hi all,
Am very excited as today I dropped off two photographs to be in a 5 week local art exhibition. I have never done this before, and as I was leaving, the coordinator said I need to be there for the "opening" this Friday evening when all the artists need to be present to meet each other and greet the public! Has anyone ever done this? Need advice as to what to do so I don't look like a total idiot! Does anyone know exactly what I am supposed to do - do I stay near my photos and tell people about them? Also, she suggested I call a local artist who is trying to start an art consortium - is anyone here in one of those, and if so, would they recommend joining one? Thanks in advance:) (If I don't reply to anyone right away it is because I am having trouble with my connection lately) |

BJ, I did something similar back in August at a local coffeehouse art gallery. I had 14 prints on display and I had to be there for the opening and for the artists reception at the end of the month.
Suggestions:
Be prepared to discuss your work... tell any stories that go along with it. You may also want to have a printed artists bio or some business cards on hand.
Dress sharp and wash before you go :)

congratulations.
Yes, I have. Not w/ photo's but I would have "openings" thrown for new collections of my glass that galleries would be showing.
Depending on who is throwing it and where, it can mean anything from formal w/ champagne, to artsy informal with white wine and nibbly bits.
AND,,,, if your in a gallery that is leaning towards the alternative, anything goes. One of mine had a juice/vitamin bar where the "bartender" was mixing up special concoctions to stimulate the cerebral cortex to make it more reseptive to the art. (((it tasted awful!, but must have worked becaues I sold a significant work!)))
The people running the thing will tell you if you need to mingle or hover. Mingling is good, keep an eye on your pieces and if you see anyone spending a lot of time at them, go over and introduce yourself.
I have been in art co-ops also. They vary tremendously. Feel free to IM me if you have any questions. |

Well done BJ, enjoy yourself :)
Is this, out of interest, digital or 35mm, same question to John.
I guess my asking is along the lines of "how large can you go and it still look great". |

Thanks Natator - this show is actually for any two or three dimensional original work. For photographs, the only requirement was that the work is framed/matted and ready to hang and taken within the past five years. I went conservative on the size to be safe - I did one 5x7 framed to 8x10, and one 8x10 framed to a 11x14. A small local show - I live in a rural part of SWNH near somewhat near Vermont - the top prize is $50. Am hoping just to get the experience, and maybe start a path to get into the more exclusive galleries that we have in the area that are hard to get into (there are a lot of artists of every kind of medium in this area). |

Good for you BJ.
I̢۪ve entered and been accepted in Art Shows here in Southern New England for the past 14 years. They are all different as to what they expect. Myself, I like to enjoy the show, move around and mingle. Talk to other Artists and watch what they do. You will find that there are people genuinely interested in your work and you. It can be quite an ego builder, all those people, in the mood to look at ART.
Circulate but find your way back to your work.
The last 2 shows I entered I had to wear a name tag. Stating I was an Artist. With the tag people would walk up to me and introduce themselves and I would show them my work and explain it to them.
Overall you will have a great time. I can remember my first show and I was very nervous. Now I realize it was unnecessary because everyone there is there because of people like you and me. To experience something new, see something new, and maybe see the world threw someone else̢۪s eyes.
Have a GREAT time BJ, and let us know about it afterward.
