Some fascinating and wonderful photos in this challenge!!

I am dragging, as I expected from my p.o.s. camera, very pleased to see that someone else had the same idea as me and they pulled it off beautifully though. While going through these photos I find myself getting very very concerned that some may be from the zoo. I hope not.

Mine was actually taken in like a nature reserve, but judging by comments I've received people may suspect it's not really natural. Oh well!

Well, both my husband and I thought we had 6.5 shots for sure, but are horribly erring on the side of Disappointment. BUT we have BOTH received fantastic comments from Bear Music...really in-depth, insightful and constructive comments. Comments that offer both criticism and personal response. Just wanted to acknowledge him here. Robert you have inspired me to go out and leave really good, heartfelt, constructive comments. Thank You.

Yeah man, if yours is the one I think it is, I know what you mean. I guess it's how familiar people are with what the habitat of the animal is.

Nice even numbers, now waiting for the drop, LOL. A lot of great entries and stiff competition in this one...

not too bad, some good comments. it was at a zoo, but made to look natural. was commented down b/c "i couldn't have survived it". i thought it added to the effect of the picture. oh well :D to each his own, i appreciated that and all comments cast so far.

good luck everyone

Slightly disappointed with this one so far. Three comments, two saying it must be domesticated when it most certainly wasn't. A little frustrating when I spent six hours outside yesterday shooting for this challenge when it was 'brass monkeys'! I think a PM during the challenge is a little unethical??

Some of the pictures are stunning, however. I'm going to look forward to scoring this one...

I was told that mine was not trusted to be in its natural environment. Sheesh! :)

Don't worry - I think we've all be receiving comments like that (unless you took a photo of a bird... that was probably in your back garden).

Seems there are more nature experts on DPC than photography experts ;-)

I just got a natural enviornment comment myself. Pretty funny since mine is in it's natural enviornment. That is ok. Some people just are not that bright.

Hehe. I put my image out there to be scored and commented on by all levels of IQ. I got a particularly idiotic comment on my entry. I try to enjoy comments like that as comic relief. I can only recall one blatently stupid comment in over a year, but in the last week I've suddenly had two blatently stupid comments. Maybe the average IQ is dropping at DPC, or maybe the 'lower-end' is starting to speak up.

Anyway, I like to get comments! But I'm considering not ticking the idiotic ones as a way of saying, "Hello, is there anyone in there?"

:-D

Knowing the type of images you produce, I can't wait to see what those comments say, and what they thought they saw... :-)

Time to find that dancing banana somewhere...

I'm in for the brown. I didn't realize how below average my photo was until I saw it on my monitor at work. My laptop screen isn't so great, so I assume that my photos would look better on other screens. Not in this case.:(

I'm not sure people would consider a dancing banana wildlife, but seeing one might be the RESULT of a wild life... ;-P

Given that the winners of the last Wildlife challenge were taken at a zoological park, a wildlife refuge and a botanical garden, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hmmm... I am not scoring as I expected, and I am kind of pissed, since I prefered to do a good crop than to leave the backround (just dirt and some plants) to show "the enviroment" ... Is the first time I am REALLY hating the DNMC fanatics....

Hmmmm....
- vote a real wildlife shot low because it looks like it was probably shot in a zoo, or
- vote a zoo shot high because there's some possibility that the animal was actually shot in its natural environment.

The problem for me is that zoos are designed in ways that allow the animals to be seen and be photographed easily. I had lots of zoo shots (went twice this week) but didn't end up using them because I thought it wasn't fair to the people shooting actual wildlife which is much harder.
So, I was a bit bitter and felt that folks with a zoo shot were "cheating" the challenge. Therefore, anything zoo-like was getting a few points knocked off.

But folks here are making excellent points, and have caused me to be less cynical and untrusting. I'm changing the way I'm thinking about this challenge and I'm going to assume that pics were not from zoos (unless it's totally visually obvious and I think there was only 1 of those) and were really wildlife shots since that's what this challenge was for.

Ooh, maybe when they are done with yours they will find my photo and bump it up too! I briefly dipped below six, then the next update brought this:

I'm not so sure. Shots outside a zoo are often taken around a bird feeder, park, salt lick, or other location where animals can be readily found. If one photographer went to a zoo, while another knew that deer often show up in the back yard at 6am, who really went to more trouble?

IMO the challenge here is photography, not tracking. Zoos are great for viewing, but rarely photo friendly. There are usually bars or fences in the way, lighting isn't always optimal, and getting a "natural" scene can be tricky. Either case presents its own set of challenges for the photographer, and as long as the subject is wilder than a toy poodle, I'm voting on the photo.
