I know, I know...ANOTHER cropping question, but I really can't decide on which crop would be better for this image I took this morning.

as shot:

I have been patiently waiting for the chance to go photograph this tree at sunrise so this morning I rode my bike, (well rode down the hills, I had to walk up them I'm so out of shape) about an hour to get to it. I had to lean out over a wall with a good 15foot drop to try and get this angle. I would have liked to take others but the weather was getting ugly so I thought I'd better get moving on. I'm also thinking of changing it to b/w if I can find the instructions on how to do it with channels.

Thanks for your help.

I like the 'as shot' photo better...

Indeed! 'As shot' is much better...

The original points the viewer to the tree. The cropped points you out to the boring sea. I'd say I like the original better, and you even get the added bonus of interesting rock.

I like the as shot image better too. If you really want to crop it you are gonna have to go a LOT tighter to the tree on the right.

Re: channels ... image/adjust/channels ... click on monochrome and play with the channel levels until you like the impact the most.

Edit ... if you want the tree to have a LOT more impact maybe like this? It IS your subject after all.

Edit 2 ... if you like that crop ... read up on the "rule of thirds". I hope this helped.

Edit 3 ... and if you REALLY want to be fussy ... look at the tutorial on levelling the horizon in the DPC Learn / Tutorials section and do that before you crop.

Thanks everyone for the input. Some really good ideas there Greetmir.

I originally shot it this way for the minimalist challenge but I really don't like it straight out of the camera and wasn't sure if it would be minimal enough, so I'm gonna sit that one out.

Thanks again for the ideas, I'll post the b/w soon.

I have to say that the original image is the best - Although for me on both images the rock that blends into the tree is a little distracting.
