Greetings...

Here is the workflow I use for creating a still life photograph:

1. Locate or setup the subject(s) for the photograph. Arrange them in a way that creates the best possible view and best composition for the photograph.

2. If not a natural scene, apply light to create highlight/lowlight contrasts and bring out textures if required.

3. Set camera for proper white balance for the supplied lighting.

4. Take a meter reading from the supplied light. Adjust exposure levels accordingly based on desired depth of field for the shot.

5. Mount camera on tripod and compose the scene within the camera's viewfinder.

6. Take one test photo.

7. Evaluate test photo for exposure and composition.

8. Make any necessary adjustments to exposure and composition.

9. Reshoot as necessary.

I would add ...

10. Download to computer and mangle in PSP

11. Re-shoot with different composition

12. Repeat 10

13. re-shoot with different subject

14. Repeat 10

15. Go back to 1 and start over

...

ed, trying to choose between 11 different images to submit

Last step. Complain that your shot is too artsy for the voters of DPC. :)

I would add between 7 and 8:

7.5: Ask an expert for their opinions and advice :)

Great info. I will use it.

And if you replace step one by : move yourself and the camera around in a way that creates the best possible view and best composition for the photograph, then you can apply it to any picture you make.

If I am out hunting for a picture on my one (not with the family) I usually do apply it.

This particular workflow doesn't 'flow' well unless i'm working at home on the photo. When i'm out in the field somewhere, I don't get the opportunity to do steps 6,7, and 8.

16. Just before the deadline, choose a photo and prepare it for upload.

17. Upload the photo to DPC just in the nick of time.

18. Note with horror that a mischievous gremlin messed up your perfect focus and added some noise, making the image appear mediocre at best.

That I hope I did this time, I think it won't be the norm!

As for all the other steps, with my little point and shoot, heck I'm lucky if I can get a decent shot of anything to start!

Going for the unusual and I'm hoping it will pay off this time :)

Shoot the subject or subject with all my Memory Sticks

Little bit more then 200 shots
Crop to size
Post all 200 shots on DPC to see how it looks
Change it until 9:00p.m (DPC time 12:00 midnight)
Damn that's not the one I wanted, oh well.
Watch the scores go down.

[Next day]
Score is low. Hoping for above "5" average.
Look at threads. Complaint rants. Another Sony being sold. Another person saying how great their Canon is.
Hope my favorites win.

There is always a extra phase for me ...

1) - 8) etc of usual stuff

9) Pack everything away

9) Post finished product on DPC

10) Realise there is a glaring problem with the photo (D'oh!)

11) Unpack everything and set it all up again

12) - 87) Try and get things the way they were when the photo basically worked

88) Pack everything away again as 12) - 87) were unsuccessful

89) Realise you have lost the original pic and now only have the resized DPC entry anyway.

89) Resubmit the original complete with error.
