OK this is going to sound really stupid, but....

It seems to me that most DSLRs are layed out in such a way that they are intended to be used with the right eye at the viewfinder. The is certainly true of my Pentax. Silly as it sounds I just cannot get the hang of this whole right eye thing. I spent 20 years on 35mm SLRs using my left eye and now it just feels 'right'. Problem is, using my left eye with a DSLR means my rather ample nose is pressed up against the LCD screen, which leave 'nose prints' (stop laughing, this is serious!). Also it is difficult to access some of the buttons on the back of the camera when I'm looking through the viewfinder in this manner.

Am I the only gumby who has this problem? Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Q.

My left eye works just fine on my Fuji.... Really don't know about the other makes of camera, but I can imagine I'd have the same problem as you if they are designed for the right eye..

If the nose prints are the only thing that's bothering you, get an eye piece extender for the viewfinder. I use my right eye and have nose prints on my LCD also. I don't think it's a left or right eye issue LOL.

Actually the extender might help with both problems. Good suggestion. I'm surprised that you have the nose print problem with your right eye, because it seems to me that DSLRs are designed so that your nose is beside the camera body when using your right eye. D'ya know what I mean?

I agree. Btw, the eye piece extender is a must have for women who wear makeup. I can always tell when my gf has used my camera because of how my LCD screen looks afterwards.

I shoot left-eye... I just wipe the LCD.

I get oils all over my screen too and I use my right eye. I sure hate that.

I shoot left and wipe the lcd. But am I the only one who uses both eyes while shooting? My right eye is open viewing the scene over my camera (or next to it in portrait).

I am left eyed also and use a hoodman. It keeps the nose prints off and also keeps the LCD from getting scratched while in my bag.

Sometimes I forget and drop the CP in the pouch and it could scratch the LCD, I do have a few paint scratches from being stupid so imagine what my LCD would look like.

The more people I watch shoot the more I realize that I'm in the (seemingly) small percentage who shoot top-hand portrait instead of bottom. My right eye is blocked by the LCD when shooting portrait.

I think the reason shooting with both eyes is favourable, is because you can continue monitoring what is happening outside of the frame, and you don't get stuck in the tunnel-vision that the viewfinder allows. Tunnel-vision isn't a big deal if you're doing portraits in a studio, but it could be a problem if you're at a wedding and there are people moving around, and you're moving with them - could lead to collisions.

Also, it's important to have both eyes open when photographing action - like sports - so you can see where the action is coming from or going to and track it more easily.

this is completetly off topic, yet still nose and photography related.

i'll never forget one of my first darkroom lessons when i was 16 (from the most stunning photographer, who was sooo much older than me (he must have been in his mid 20s then ;-P)). i was amazed to discover that if you have a small scratch on your negative, you can rub your finger on your nose, collect some nose grease, rub it lightly on your negative, and it will refract the light over the scratch, thereby lessening the appearance of the horrid white line.

this was a very important lesson for new photographers, to whom rolling film on those horrid little reels was still an almost insurmountable challenge (i grew to love the reels,a nd still miss them)

i guess i just wipe the lcd, as i'm left eyed too. never really thought about much...

Erm, what's a negative? Is that when you invert the colours in PS? To fix a scratch on that, you need a clone-brush, not a greasy nose... ;-p

getting nose grease on your finger is also a great way to get rid of foam from keg beer... ;} of course you have to swirl your greasy finger in the foam, but...

oh and i shoot with both eyes and still have a greasy camera. although not so bad this time of year.

Ah, so that's why Nikons have those flip-up lcd protectors... for nose grease, not scratches. :-)

Left eyed screen wiper here too.

I just clean it off on occasion with a soft cloth/ lens cloth/ t-shirt. I don't much care if I scratch the LCD a bit.

I'm left-eye dominant too, its called cross-sighting. All my life, I shoot guns that way, bow & arrows that way, take pictures that way, etc.... I too have tried to re-train myself (my father tried for years to make me right-eye dominant), but no luck... so I've just learned to live with it. Its not wrong, just different.

hehe:)) I thought I was the only one with those nose marks on the screen...:) I couldn't understand it, I thought my nose might be too long:))) hmm, I didn't even realise most people use their right eye. how very funny!
probably that's why I enjoy making self portraits so much:)

I use left eye to look through viewfinder but I keep right open to be able to 'watch' what is going on...

So funny. Never thought of this. Now I realiza that I am left eye for the camera. Shoting guns (back to military training)right eye. If I wink then naturaly i close my right one.

I see no big deal. I also press me big nose against the LCD and leave marks but never really bothered me.

Funny thing...

I am right handed, however I shoot left eyed, I strugged right eye forever because I thought it was the correct way to go, but now when I pick up a camera I immediately go left eye into the viewfinder. Just more comfortable this way. Wiping is all you can do, although I don't notice it being much of a hassle.

Ditto... I CAN'T use my right eye as I have VERY bad vision in it. So, I'm constantly wiping my LCD. Haven't notice much problem with accessing buttons on the Rebel or XT.
