hey matt,
my honest opinion dont get that lens. Most lenses when they cover such a vast zoom area are often not very sharp, and just getting a lens because of the convenience is nto a good idea. If i were you since you already have the wide end covered with your current lenses, i would save up a little more and get the canon 70-200 f/4 L (non IS). This lens will be far superior to any image you'll get with the 28-200.
also keep in mind.. the photos from that lens on dpc were sort of what i would call the needles in the haystack. They look goo d because they wer e sharpened and your seeing them at a very small size. of course any lens is capable of taking sharp images, its just the consistancy that separates the puppies from the dogs.

Canon's worst lense or damn close.
Both Sigma and Tamron have same focal length zooms that are better pieces of glass.

how about one of the dozens of 70-300 lenses?
i know canon has a couple, amd i have a friend whose really happy with the Sigma 70-300 APO macro dg. hwever just be wary that you pay for what you get, more money equals better equipment most of the time.
Is the lens just because you taking this trip? of sp have you thought about possibly renting a lnes for that wekk or however long your gonna be in sn fran. Renting is a good option, especially because if you got a 70-300 or that 28-200 you might end up selling it on ebay very soon for soething better.

no its not just for the trip so renting is not a option.
i want something with a wide range of zoom.
what about this lens
Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM
its $ 409 which i can work with and it has IS
its not as much zoom as i wanted but it would work til i can afford a nicer one later on |

you've hit the nail ont the head matt, i think a lens like that would be perfect for you. Its one of my personal favorite lenses and for what you're gonna be doing in san fran its probably correct. Just keep in mind that you're eventually gonna have to fork over some cash if you wanna start buildin up that lnes lineup ;)

make sure you get UV filter for it (and all of your other lenses if you dont have them already)...and go to a store if you can and buy it there. Make sure it feels right in your hands before you drop the money on it. The sales rep might recomend something els that i didnt think of that you fall in love with. So if you can get to a store and get it there. Also theres nothing like getting home and ripping open the box of a new lens, its better then sitting around and waiting for it for days :)
good luck!

Don't stick a $2 piece of glass over your $300 lens.
Even if you decide to buy really good filters, read this first:
Filter Flare Factor

| FYIW... you can get good factory-refurbished lenses at Adorama. A 28-135 IS is $349, and the excellent 70-200 f/4 is $499. That's not a huge difference over new, but it might matter to you. |

That lens might be decent, but with a 3.5-5.6 maximum aperture, it's slow as hell. Image stabilisers aren't a substitute for faster lenses.
You can get the extremely good Tamron 28-75mm for less money, which is a constant 2.8 and probably wipes the floor with that lens, although it doesn't cover as much of a range so you'd hope so.
A 28-75 for most of your shooting, with a 70-300 Sigma APO for when you want a longer lens would be a good pair, but the Canon 70-200 4.0 would be great to get eventually. |
