Here's what I have already gotten from this challenge:

- LOTS of exercise hiking in search of elusive wildlife
- a few pictures of fungi from when I felt compelled to shoot *something* to justify the search time
- several useless pictures of wildlife rears scurrying away and distant bird silhouettes in the sky
- the certain knowledge that I want a really long zoom for this sort of thing some day!
- hours of solitude which I've rather enjoyed
- a few pictures I can live with, and the irresistable urge to go try again just in case there's a better opportunity and ... 'cuz I'm really enjoying trying to shoot wildlife in the wild :-)

I am fortunate in that near where I live is a large regional park around wetlands where the land still looks natural and has that icon of Australia in abundance. I know EXCATLY the shot I want, I was thinking about entering it for a free study but, well, looks like I can put it in this challenge. Trouble is, I have to time it right so the animal is doing what I want to capture it doing - and it's not what you might think, especially if you have a gutter mind.

My point of view expressed here (photographer comments).

EDIT
This is the second time that this challenge has appeared in the dead of winter for us folks in the northern hemisphere. Maybe the next one should be heal in the spring or fall?

Well, it certainly is more of a challenge to shoot wildlife when it has an infinite chance of escaping at any moment. Not that zoos aren't challenging at all; shooting a good picture of any live animal can be quite difficult. I just find the wildlife in the wild shooting more of a challenge to me, personally. Voting-wise ... guess I'd be more impressed with "in the wild" shots, especially after trekking around after my own.

well after this morning I have 3 images. 2 portraits (1 with very good detail) and one other image with the subject in his natural environment. I hope that in the week end i can take a better image but now I have a problem, portrait or the environment?

So far I have really enjoyed this challenge. I went to the local wildlife refuge and spent a few hours walking and driving around in it trying to get pictures of herons, ducks, woodpeckers, deer, and looked for alligators but never saw one, and even went walking about 3 miles down a so-called beaver dam trail around dusk to see if I could see any beavers....didn't even see a dam, lol. But I've really enjoyed the time spent just walkin around and enjoying nature.

All I gotta say is nobody better be takin' any photos at the Zoo! If you live in a big city, tough. If you don't want to shoot pigeons and rats then you better get in your car (or whatever) and take a road trip - I did. There are plenty of challenges that due to where people live, they have an edge over the rest - good for them.

Like for instance, the first challenge I entered was 'On the Beach'. For goodness sakes, I live in the middle of the desert! Not until you get to the 29th photo in that challenge do you find a photo that's not actually 'On the Beach'. It may not seem fair but the rules were meant to be followed. Yes, I'm an 'out-of-the-box' person but the rules are specific:

'For the purpose of this challenge, "wildlife" should be considered non-domesticated mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians living in a natural environment.'

My entry is probably another 5.3 or something. The point is, I learned something AND, I had fun doing it. Thanks for reading my rant...good luck to all...NO ZOOS!

I am a zoo photgrapher through and through. I love the zoo. I lvoe being able to come home with shots from the zoo that you arent quite totaly sure thats where they are from. I almost went to the zoo this week knowing full well I could get something that would work. Instead I took the kids somewhere else to check out a location I had never really been before. And I came out with at least 6 shots that could very possibly be top 20 and one that might be top 10 if not better. And boy did I learn some cool stuff at the same time. I never thought I could shoot unkept animals. Now I have a whole new avenue to experiment with in the future. Bring it on!

I learned 2 things from my experience with this challenge.

Firstly, if you spook the animals I photographed but go and sit for a while, they usually calm back down and give some good shots.

Secondly, for wildlife photography, I need a real telephoto lens on a DSLR to get the effect I want without sppoking my subjects.

Isn't life 'Wonder-Full'?

"non-domesticated mammals" - this leaves the door wide open for a whole variety of people!!! :-)

small question, is a dead animal(in his environment) wildlife?

I think the LIFE part of wildlife rules that out. hehe

I would consider it dead wildlife, and therefore, wildlife. But I'm not sure that I would vote roadkill very high.

A Zoo is okay in my book. Try saying a tiger or lion is domesticated!

Right, pets corner might be pushing the limits a bit. But most zoo residents are still wild.

True, but not living in their natural environment ...

what do you think of wildlife habitat - where the animal lives, just not "home" at the time. I have something specific in mind so I thought I would throw that out there.

I agree, but for many of these animals, the zoo is their natural habitat, being born and bred there. Providing the photo is not taken including chain link fencing, it would be hard to tell the difference. Also, for some species, a zoo is the only place where they can be found, being extinct in the 'true' wild.
