File photo:

I'm so surprised this happened in this neighborhood. My neighbors got hit as well. I figure it was two guys, because both the driver and passenger side door handles/locks were popped & destroyed.

I had a Pioneer CD/MP3 deck. They took the face plate, but couldn't get the rest of it out, though they tried. In the effort they tore my dash board apart. >:-(

There was nothing else taken, as I don't keep anything in my car.

The pisser is, it has an alarm system, but I had it disabled because I always hear them going off and thought it would be annoying.

Now I'm concerned about the safety of my family in our house. I'm considering buying some form of aggressive defense, like a shotgun or something. Some way to put someone out f commission without killing them.

I had my car broken into a few months ago. I live in a 65+ community so I was pretty shocked too. Honestly, who breaks into old people's cars?! The guy stole my deck that was probably close to 5 years old. He somehow got in without breaking a window and didn't do any damage to my dash. The guy didn't take the 12 disk changer or the Bazooka. He pulled my seats down in the back so he had to have seen them unless he was blind. I was pissed when I saw the deck gone and the back seats unlatched, but when I flipped them down and saw the tube and changer I just cracked up laughing.

I too have an alarm, but never armed it. I didn't want to seem rude and wake up all the old people.

My insurance didn't even ask questions. They just connected me to some guy in a stereo shop that was incharge of replacing my deck. Since it was no longer made he had to find one that was equal. Somehow he figured a $300 deck was equal to one I paid less than $200 for 5 years ago, AND threw in an iPod cable and installation. I paid the $100 deductable and that's it.

I'd like to meet my thief and shake his hand.

=)

I am so sorry to hear of your experience. Hopefully they will be stopped from their intolerable behaviour....

Get a cardboard cutout of a BIG black guy and put it in your window.

It sounds like a long shot, but a colleague of mine used to have fairly regular (mostly small and annoying) break-ins in his car. He has had none since installing a little flashing red light on top of the dashboard a few years ago. Fake but functional.

A beanbag load will be pretty effective... works best if you shoot them in the bean bag.

When you do this make sure to look before you shoot. You'd hate to shoot a family member. Also any thoughts of shooting to wound or stop are foolish. Don't own a firearm unless you're willing to shoot to kill. Full load, center mass. I'd recommend a baseball bat under each adults bed and near any entrance door.

First...Sorry you got robbed
Second...the parking guy is a serious tard. I'd have moved my car closer to his (since you could still get out on your drivers side).
Third...My dad has owned his truck for about five years, and up until about a week ago never realized that it had an alarm. He acidentally turned it on, and then something set it off in the driveway. We kept hearing it go off and couldn't figure out what the heck it was. It took us about 30 minutes before we realized it was his truck.
Fourth...I don't keep anything important in my van either. Heck the siren and emergency lights that are installed are worth more than the van.
Sixth...Don't buy a gun unless you're willing (and able) to KILL someone. Do like fir3bird said and just get a baseball bat (and lock the doors).

Hey Slip,

Tough news about the car. It really sounds like they were amateurs at best; if they were pros your stereo would be history right now. I can imagine that you feel very violated right now but take it from a gun owner, that's not the answer now. Like fir3bird said, unless you are ready to take a life forget about owning a gun. I personally have all my guns locked up and well away from were my two boys could ever get a hold of them. I sleep with the home phone and my cell phone right next to me and the good old Louisville Slugger behind the bedroom door. I've also invested in a good home security system that I arm every night before we all go to bed. If anyone gets in I'll know, the neighbors will know and more importantly the authorities will know. If they really want to party I'll show them how all those years of baseball paid off!

Take care Slip it will get better with time, hope this thread helps.

Laters,
Nald

Put an alarm system in my house. Not only will I know when there's an intruder, I'll know where he/they are (zones). If I'm not home I and/or the authorities can get a phone call if I set it that way.

I'll get my car fixed this week and have the alarm system armed, same for my wife's car.

I still want to look into some motion-activated video recording gear for outside my house.

I looked at some guns, but for now I'm going the baseball bat route. I admit I fealt a bit shakey around the guns, but I would kill to protect my family, no question about it.

Game cameras are pretty cheap. they are 35mm still cameras, but will work as evidence.

Right on Slip, I think you've gone the right route here. You know, we installed some motion activated cameras at work and they ROCK. PM jrtodd; he should have more details if you are interested on what we installed.

Take some time with the gun thing, get comfortable around them, and take a gun safety course. You have every right to protect your family, just be smarter and more knowledgeable than the bad guys.

awww Slippy. I am so sorry this happened to you. I'd rather go through burst water pipes and broken fuel lines to have to live in fear for my family. I wish I had an extra rifle - I'd give it to you for home protection. Aluminum baseball bats work well though and make a nice ding sound as that smack upside the intruders head.

hugs to you sweety {{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}

Sorry for your loss. As armed as I am and very pro right-to-keep-and- bear-arms, I would not shoot someone over something that could be replaced. It was probably just kids too, or someone who REALLY needed some dope.

cost of fixing your car....a few hundred
cost of dui....about 10K
cost of shooting someone, even a criminal....at least 10K

we have a few punks in our neighborhood. a neighbor of mine got all of her kid's christmas presents stolen out of the back of her car the week before christmas. in her driveway. with her husband's cop car parked right behind her.

a few months ago i got my fancy-pants stereo ripped off for the 2nd time. i just put the factory cassette system back in and bought a tape deck player thing that lets me hook up my ipod. for $8 i have the best car stereo i've ever had...i never used the CD player. :)

see now that's the good part of living out in the rural tundra of Alaska - I don't even have to lock my house up when I leave.

Slippy I sure hope your life can feel normal again soon. I really feel for you
