I took a risk w/mine, too, & added grain. I'm surprised more entries have not taken advantage of the Expert Advanced rules. The comments have been the best part! Thank you to those who commented!

Just because the rules are there to use doesn't mean that you MUST or even SHOULD use them...

I'm a little surprised at this. Portrait challenges usually seem to score on the high side.

Mine is doing okay but nothing stellar; perhaps the higher scorers are just being quiet, eh, Shannon? :)

I'm sorry, but I'll admit that my voting average went down during this challenge. There is some fantastic photography amongst the 494 entries, but there is also alot of mediocre-at-best as well.

I'll try to do some commenting now that I'm done voting, but the fact that theres 500 entries makes that a very, very daunting task.

I agree on both points.

I put it to everyone who's not happy with their score to get out there and comment like crazy. None of this "Great shot" crap either. Be honest. that's what we're all here for. ;)

With 500 entries I'm try to comment on as many as I can, but don't be offended if it sounds terse or blunt or looks cut and pasted. There's just not enough time in my day to offer more. :)

This Challenge has convinced me that I'm way too generous in my scoring. I'm going Draconian from here on in.

If I'm giving 5's, 6's and 7's to images that aren't far far better than mine and people are giving me 3's and 4's then I need to re-adjust my scale. I overscore in general because I don't see DPC as the place for an iron hand but now I'm rethinking that.

No more Mister Nice Guy!!!

could you please wait until after you've voted on my photo to start handing out low scores?!?! I've suffered enough in the voting up to this point ... another '3' just might put me over the edge ... and people wonder why I drink .. I'll just start sending them here to view my scores and they'll likely quit asking!!

There are some really nice shots in this challenge, but there are many that don't even look like they tried.
...Take a snapshot, convert to B&W, viola...! :b

So... I am learning what NOT to do. Still hoping to get above a five, but time will tell. Lots here in the same boat and I feel your pain!!

Don't despair! There will always be another challenge!

Be thankful it's not you lowest scoring image EVER.

I don't like the notion of lowering votes just cause you're not doing well. I have my system (usually very generous) and I'm sticking to it. This challenge just seems to be rather underwhelming.

Black and White is pretty hit or miss, IMO. Suck it up and try to improve your next one. Making us all suffer isn't the answer...

This actually has little to do with this Challenge...it's just that this Challenge kinda woke me up. I tend to give out nurturing scores and that's not the way to be. Especially if I'm out of sync with the sites general voting scale.

What do you care what other people think, or vote ? Do you have an overwhelming need to conform ?

Didn't think so.

It's not only being out of sync. Since i ve joined last year, the amount of new memebers has doubled!!!! There's just more competition ou there. It's bloody frustrating. 500 submissions? And here i though I would hit a bit hiegher than 6. and i 'm under it!

Sometimes i just feel like quitting this damn competition. It can be demoralizing sometimes. I wish the update button would disappear!!!!

SITE COUSIL, HOW ABOUT A DEBATE FOLLOWED BY A VOTE OF WHETHER OR NOT THE "UPDATE" BUTTON SHOULD BE REMOVED OR NOT!?!

edit:
wow everytime i say that something like, as in to site cousil, i fee like i'm addressing the gods hehe

YES! Conform...conform...conform.

Actually this triggered something that I've been thinking about for a while about my voting pattern and how off it is.

There is a site scale of sorts that does exist. For example, a 7 on average, is Top Ten material and so on. I give what I believe are bad images, full of flaws, 5's and 6's on occassion. I don't think that's too smart.

My scoring is not inline with my own beliefs so I'm correcting the error in my ways. My 6 should be a 4 but I've been gifting people.

I just questioned, why I'm gifting people, when I'm getting a punch in the nose. I am NOT going to become a Troll. I'm just going to slide my scale down a bit.

I think that's why a 4 is the new 5. Voting has gotten harsher as people receive harsh scores. I'm not saying I never give a low score, but they are few and far between. Yet, I receive them all the time. I doubt I'll break a 5 in this challenge. That's OK though.
01/10/2007 03:30:36 PM · #147
i for one am voting normally....even with what i believed to be a good shot sitting down in the 4s. I'm trying my hardest to give fair scores...

So far I think I have.

Hehe... Actually, I think selective focus/blur is one of the problems with my entry.

Well... if you don't ever do poorly, you don't tend to learn. This is my second worse scoring image ever! I can't believe this even compares to that embarrassing n00b attempt at photography.

Eug, I just visited your profile and your portfolio is awesome!!
