Ok, I know that I am pretty new to all this, but I don't understand the low score. I looked at the other portraits and mine sure isn't one of the bests, but should rank much higher than the 'snapshot' types. I WISH PEOPLE WOULD LEAVE COMMENTS!!!

Should've stuck with Song Titles.... there are some pretty far reaches there. I am damn proud of the shot I entered.... one of my best portraits... and it's bombing! I just don't get it! Argh!

My second worse score ever. Never tried a portrait of a person. Guess I have a lot to learn. I knew it wasn't great, but I really tried. I wonder if it helps to have a subject is either beautiful or interesting.

Well ... I think a character study of a 107 year old man with LOTS of wrinkles and still a bit of fire in his eyes would be good if done right ...

Mind you ... there is some nice eye candy there for the male voters.

There are a LOT of people here (some very serious professionals not getting a 5 here on this particular challenge)

Do NOT be discouraged ... not to mention it is early days yet ... and the competition is brutal ...

I am in AWE of some of the photographs in this competition and I am sure I will be giving out lots of 9s and 10s even though it will reduce my chances of a good standing ... but I wonder if others do the same.

BTW ... as I am new here, I would appreciate a definition of "trolls" ... Is that people that are competing here that give everyone a score of 1 to bump themselves?

Wow, granted this shot was last minute, and I know I still have a lot to learn....But this is a little low I believe. Of course If I had any comments to tell me what was liked or disliked..Some constructive feedback of ANY kind would be helpful.

Ya, something like that... Or people that love to DNMC pictures without thinking.

Edit: DNMC = Does Not Meet Challenge

*** Please people, let us not start ANOTHER troll discussion here! ***

Sorry ... I just did not know what it meant ...

Don't such people get found out by their average score to all stats?

Is that available to see?

I gave out a WHACK of 7's, 8's, 9's and 2 10's in the fence challenge (which I competed in) because they deserved those scores IMHO.

... and ... I voted on EVERY photo in the challenge.

Here here (or is that, Hear hear?) In any event I feel your pain. Mine finally struggled over the 5 mark though:

I`m not doing that bad watching at others scores here, still I`m not posting score since I don`t want to jinx it (as usual) but what I found weird is the lack of comments, I have non, not even from someone who choose my pic as a fav...(but for that I am happy :D!)
01/10/2007 09:59:18 AM · #94
I'm taking a beating here. My two comments were about the same thing, but definetely not worth the low score I have. I knew I should have went with the other photo.....at least it's eye candy for the guys. Still got days to go, so hopefully it'll creep up.

My score is killing me, when I entered the image I really thought it was one of the strongest images I have entered for ages.

Obviously, I was wrong.

I get what you're saying...it is a matter of preference. But there are B + W photos without high contrast that are well done too...I think there should be a whole lot more B+W challenges to get users better acquainted with what makes a good B+W picture...not just desaturating.

I would like to add...Enough with the alluring (supposedly) nubile women with bedroom eyes already!!!! Ugh. I wonder what the ratio of men:women in voting is...?

I LOVE Black and White photography..would have to say it's my preference and this is such a treat getting to look at so many great pictures!

Not sure, but voters seem to think that Black and White = High Contrast....well that's the sort of thing I'm getting comments about...lack of high contrast. Silly me, I thought that was a different challenge. Whatever happened to the beauty of gentle contrast in classic black and white photography?

I am seeing plenty of lovely subtle black and white shots with some grain even...just lovely work. There are probably 2 schools within the Black and White world..those who crave high contrast studio-type shots and those who are drawn to more subtle, in-depth, gritty pictures.

Well there are enough in this challenge of both!!

It's a matter of taste I think. I am one of those who want high contrast, hard pictures. I'm just done voting and like to say a few things:

just desaturating your pic doesn't make it a strong B&W
stay away from Neat Image (seen a lot of that or similar effects)
Sepia is not B&W
enough with the kids already!(sorry proud mums, dads, uncles & aunts ;P )

I've seen some very good beauty portraits, and some very strong character portraits.

While that's certainly true, something else also is true. Most every 'B&W' print you see in a gallery isn't a completely neutral greyscale reproduction. Look carefully at a fine B&W print and it should be pretty obvious.

So while:

Sepia is not B&W, it might also be worth considering that
B&W is not greyscale.

Palladium prints, bronze prints, silver prints, platinum prints.
All usually considered 'B&W', none of them 'neutral grey'

MIS B&W printing inks are another good example, at the top of the page.

4 sets of B&W inks, 4 sets of warm through cool B&W inks.

That's not such a bad idea. I knew I didn't have a winner, but this is brutal.

I don't understand why you would want to self DQ?

Just because your scores aren't what you hoped for? That's like leaving halfway in the game because the other team is winning???

I think you'd better let it ride and see what the final score is, read the comments and learn from it.
