Hmmm yes, this portrait took so much courage to organise and set up: huge emotional cost involved here - so when I woke up and saw it at 7.0 I was excited, but within half an hour it was 6.1 and now at 5.9 with 21 votes. Well, as Tim said, whatever happens, will have the print made and popped into a frame before the week is up.

how can you tell wot score someone gave you?
i gave you a nice comment and a great score by the way ...
i started out at 6.3 and then went right down ...

Not sure, but voters seem to think that Black and White = High Contrast....well that's the sort of thing I'm getting comments about...lack of high contrast. Silly me, I thought that was a different challenge. Whatever happened to the beauty of gentle contrast in classic black and white photography?
I am seeing plenty of lovely subtle black and white shots with some grain even...just lovely work. There are probably 2 schools within the Black and White world..those who crave high contrast studio-type shots and those who are drawn to more subtle, in-depth, gritty pictures.
Well there are enough in this challenge of both!!

I havent entered a challenge in over two months, at 11:30 last night I changed my entry, it looked to average for a challenge of almost 500 photos, hope I made the right choice, getting some great comments, and a above average score.

This is my first ever entry so I don't really know if that is good, bad or average. I'm absolutely made up that people think my photo is worth a vote, so I am happy with whatever my score is. Just wish I could get a few more comments so I would know how to improve, however with so many entries it is impossible to comment on them all. |

My second worse score ever. Never tried a portrait of a person. Guess I have a lot to learn. I knew it wasn't great, but I really tried. I wonder if it helps to have a subject is either beautiful or interesting. |

It's a matter of taste I think. I am one of those who want high contrast, hard pictures. I'm just done voting and like to say a few things:
just desaturating your pic doesn't make it a strong B&W
stay away from Neat Image (seen a lot of that or similar effects)
Sepia is not B&W
enough with the kids already!(sorry proud mums, dads, uncles & aunts ;P )
I've seen some very good beauty portraits, and some very strong character portraits.

This was one of those shots that I thought was perfect - needed minimal editing, looked great, figured it was perhaps the best I'd ever taken.

Goodness knows I love comments, but in this case, the one I have says that one of the qualities that I thought made the shot in fact detracts from it.
