OK, if you'll notice I have a new camera under my profile... thanks to my mom for bailing me out, I upgraded to a Rebel XT ...just ordered it minutes ago.
Why? Because my Rebel is dead. Err99. And a horrible slapping sound when I click the shutter. I assume it has something to do with either the mirror or shutter.
So, I know the Err99 is a catch all error, so I took off the flash, the lens and the CF card (turning the camera to be able to shoot cardless). Takes one shot at most and then I hear the horrible slapping sound and get Err99 again.
Anyone else had this problem? Is it an expensive fix? I wouldn't mind having it fixed to use as a backup camera.

Welcome to the XT world. Did you try calling Canon? Just a though. :P
My condolences. |

Shutter replacement is usually a fairly simple fix (at least it was with a D60) The whole shutter unit is replaced - cost about $200 I think.

Haven't called Canon yet... my mother offered to buy me an XT (after watching me pout while trying to figure out what was wrong). I almost cried I swear... was like watching an old friend gasp for breath.
As far as getting it repaired... I'm not sure... since you can buy XT's for $500 ... not sure spending much money on it would be a wise choice.

Might well be cheaper now. The D60 was a $3k+ camera. The cost of the shutter, relative quality etc probably means it'll be cheaper now.

Err99 means that the flash is stuck. The clicking noise is the flash-latch releasing repeatedly.
Try hitting the flash release button and prying the flash up by hand. |

If you get it repaired, you've got a perfect body for an IR conversion... |

Nope, err99 means the camera is thinking "I know something is wrong, but I'll be damned if I know what!" |

Flash pops up fine and even when up I still here that horrible slapping sound...
I'm really thinking it's either the shutter or mirror... both move out of the way if I put it in clean mode....

Whoops. I guess the only time I've seen it is when I was fat-fingering the flash doing portraits. |

I might be convinced to sell it cheap to someone interested in IR photography :-)

Canon site suggests starting w/cleaning lens contacts, (whatever), then try turning off the camera, removing the battery...wait 15 seconds and then place back in camera, turn on. If that doesn't work...send it in they say!
And yes...Err99 is a catch-all code. :P

And then if you videotape it and send it to America's Funniest Home Videos, you can pay for the repairs... |

Hey, not my idea...I would have already tried that (like resetting a router) and then still been ticked because it didn't do a darn thing! :P |

hmmmm, maybe I should wait 15 seconds :-)
Nope, still dead ....
Did some research and the cost of replacing the shutter is about $200... definitely not worth the cost, I believe... I think I may be putting my old friend to rest. :-(
