hey everyone, i recently entered a photography contest on photolaureates.com, and to sign up you had to enter your address, name, and some other little stuff, to see the photo i entered go to:
flickr.com/photos/ryandunnewold
but here is my problem, i didnt really think my picture was amazing or anything, but they told me i had qualified as a finalist for the $6500 grand prize and they asked if i wanted to buy a booklet thing they printed with my picture in it for like 70 bucks or something, saying that that was how they raised the 6500 dollars. they also chose me as one of the 50 photographers of this month. and they asked for a picture of me, to tell about myself, my photography style, and about the photograph. im posting because i want to know if this is a scam or if its actually something i should follow through on and keep giving more information like what they ask, so if any have heard of this site, please post. thx to all,
ryand |

RUN AND HIDE!!! Its a scam! All they want is you to buy a huge book full of crappy pictures.
Edit to say: EVERYONE who submits a picture gets the same "You are a finalist" type message.

I actuall paid money to Photolaureates. This is definitely a scam. For the information of other scamees this is what I did about it. After several attempts to contact them and receiving automated replies, I threatened to report them to the Fair Trading Authority in my country (Australia) and guess what............the money was credited to my bank account within days. Maybe I was just lucky but it pays to try. I'll be more careful in future.

I think it is funny that everyone calls this scam. Sure it may be a wrong, but let me give you an example of somethign similar that is accepted everyday.
I received my Bachelor's Degree last year. I made the Deans List and got a pin from the university that said Deans List. Yeah Me. Then a couple of months later I got mail from this Dean's List Scholar company that wanted me to send them my information so I could be put in the annual book fo Dean's List scholars. Woohoo. Then I read on to see that for just $45 I could buy the book that my name was going to be in.
Err, scam for photographers, but perfectly acceptable in the educational world?
So what if they chage you 70 dollars to be in a book. So what if that is how they raise their prize money. How does the lottery raise their prize money? Ticket sales.
If you want to and can afford to spend 70 dollars to see your photos printed in a book then do so. As long as you get the book. I imaginve the less than 10% of the photographers on this site will ever be published in a book (minus microstock photos).

I have to tell this story....Back in the 90's I submitted some lyrics I wrote to a song/lyric writing contest. I received a letter from them saying I was a finalist and said I could buy a book with my lyrics and name and blah, blah, blah. I thought "Oh this is just a scam and they just want me to buy the book!". So I ignored it and forgot about it. Several months later I received a letter saying I was the grand prize winner and that I won the Crystal Music Award and $1,000.00 dollars!
So I guess someone does have to win these things. I now wish I would have bought the book!

Just because someone wins the prize, it doesn't mean that to the other 5000 people who bought the book it isn't a scam. They might not be scams in the legal sense of the word, but they are out to screw people out of their money. And they do.
And yea, the lottery's a scam too. I just know that the State of Oregon is making sure that the numbers I play don't come up. Yep, the Oregon Lottory does good things... actually, they should say that the Oregon Lottory and MikeJ do good things. Cause if it wasn't for me playing they couldn't do all those good things. LOL!

I cant not stress enough to everyone on here. DONT NOT BELEAVE THIS SITE!!!Photography Laureates rips people off.
I am one of thopse people, I enter my work online for contest and reseved a notice that I had won and for a
fee I can buy a book with my work and that of others, I thought that was cool so my husband bought two of them for $115.00
last summer. they said that becouse they were still sreechin for others to be in this book it would be sent 1-4-09.
so I sent them an e-mail yesterday askin when it would be mailed and have not reseved any news.
If you go to BBB and look them up you will see that their facks but theres others.
I have called the Attorney generals office in CA about filing a report maybe if enough people do this
action will be takin. If you wish to help start a law suit please call 1-916-322-3360 and ask them to mail you the papers.
It's a start to justice for some of us. I'm goin to try to get something out of this, I maybe out a book but Atleast I'll sleep
a lil better a night. thanks Sandy |

It's so frustrating that places like this continue to take advantage of folks who are honest enough themselves that they trust others to be. I'm glad you're taking some action to try to stop them. Good luck :) |

Yeah, that book's a scam too. So is the book about Who's Who and similar "offers" They promote it as a way to get your name out there and recognized for your achievements. The problem is that the only people who read those books are the same people who paid to get their name in it.
You'd be better off making your own book full of your own photos and self-publishing it the way Gordon did here |
