Just want to clarify those test shots are STRAIGHT out of camera, with NO adjustments or crops, the circular blur does decrease significantly with a tripod. I wanted you to see what the camera, vs. editing can do.
thx muck
and I will let you know cool

some shots are 100, 200, 400, 800 iso, (the ones where there are 4 similar shots

Thanks for all your input folks, I think I've made a decision.
I would really like a Rebel for these reasons:
Less depth of field.
Better quality pictures.
Usability at high ISOs.
SLR feel to camera.
Flexibility with lenses.

However, there is a big reason why the Rebel isn't right for me at the moment, and that reason is convenience.
I frequently take completely different shots at a moment's notice, and don't want to have to keep changing lenses all the time.
The A1 is just not right for me, and the price is too close to the Rebel.

I'm going to wait for the Panasonic FZ10, which I think is going to have enough quality and features to keep me happy until I can afford a DSLR.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some DSLR owners buy an FZ10 as well to carry around with them for the convenience factor. For the price, you get a 12x F2.8 throughout the entire range Leica lens... this would be worth it without the body!
If I do professional photography at some point in the future, it's going to be portrait and event photography, so I can keep the FZ10 for the fun outdoors stuff, and save up for a DSLR in the meantime. I'm busy getting a business off the ground at the moment, so it'll be a while before I have time to really make the most of the quality that the Rebel would have to offer me.
So that means I'll be using my Optio S for the next few months until the FZ10 is released in the UK, which looks like it could be March or April.
I've asked in another thread, but got no answer to this one, so I'll ask again. The FZ10 is being released in America within the next month... is there anybody holidaying to or from America who would be willing to bring one over for me for a small profit? I would only trust someone from DPC!
Thanks again for all the input,

Bob

I'll come over if you pay for my flight. :)

Seriously though. I was reading this thread and found it interesting. I haven't looked into the FZ10 at all. I pretty much had my mind set to wait for the Sony DSC F828, anyone know when it's coming out for sure? What made the FZ10 more attractive to you? I'd like to check it out a bit. Got some good links?

Mid-November is what I've been told. This is confirmed by some reviews.

The FZ10 looks great because of the Image Stabilisation. This will go some way towards solving the high noise levels at higher ISOs problem.
FZ1 owners swear by the combination of 12x zoom and image stabilisation and say it's the best thing since sliced bread. I've looked at plenty of pictures by the FZ10, and like the results. By the time you get to the price range of the new Sony, again I'd rather go for the rebel. I really have my heart set on either a DSLR, or a prosumer with image stabilisation.

I thought the 828 had image stabilization as well, but perhaps I am wrong. I'd love to get a rebel but I can't afford to invest in a bunch of lenses quite yet. Thanks zeuszen. Sounds like the perfect time to ask for it for a Christmas present! :)
