I think too many people make the incorrect assumption that most voters are dedicated followers of the forums. By extension, those people make a similarly incorrect assumption that most voters know their personal styles or even their personal stories. That just isn't the case.
I actually read the forums pretty regularly (though I don't often post), and while I recognized the style of sherpet's entry, I couldn't place the photographer let alone know her health situation.
DPC is a large community. Those who prowl the forums are a smaller, yet (obviously) more vocal, subset of that community. The majority, however, is relatively silent. But just like Nixon's, they vote. |

Based on the comments I've seen on a lot of images in this challenge, I think a lot of people who judged in this category didn't actually read the description or have no idea what the word "representing" implies.
DPC should implement a pop-up (like the '3' vote one) that brings up the challenge description when a person goes to make their first vote... |

I stand by my vote, and my comment, and also by my gripe that I do not care to be berated about it, via e-mail, in particupar before the challenge is over.
And, even though my natural inclination is to think, "OK, in the future I will not comment if I give out a low score, or not mention it, just not to get in trouble.", what I'm going to do is exactly the opposite. If when I vote I see a picture that to me deserves a low score, I will comment, and mention the vote. Few things are worse than being intimidated by whatever person or group you don't agree with; this is what's happening here, and it's despicable. Nobody should feel intimidated to speak up their mind. My comment wasn't rude, it was short and to the point, and very much my perception of the image and the situation. I stand by it. |

I agree, Ursula. If you give a vote and comment, you have given your opinion on that photo. If we are to fear voting and comment for fear of retaliation, then the site may as well close down. The voting system is what generates the site. You do what you feel is right. |

What did I think about this image?
Well. I thought it was a good shot. I gave it a six vote, which was lower than its end result, so plenty of other people also thought it was a good shot.
Did it fit the challenge? I thought so. The challenge description said Take a photograph representing what you do most of the time if you don't work.
I thought it fairly obvious that this was depicting someone who spends a lot of their time gardening. Meets the challenge in my opinion. I don't see how it's any different to taking a shot of a computer, or a pair of someone's hands, or even, for example, a paint brush.
But I think it is worth remembering that photos entered in the challenges are placed their to be judged, and every voter is entitled to think whatever they like about a shot, and vote and comment accordingly. They are, in fact, encouraged to comment by the rules. With each and every shot, we have to accept that some people will think highly of it, and others will not, as is their right to do so.
So, Sherpet, I would encourage you to continue to photograph the subjects that bring you joy, and to revell in that joy and the high positions that you get in challenges - and, when you get a comment that perhaps does not run with the flow of your joy, take it not as a shot across your bow, but simply as part of the competition, and roll with the waves.
And just think of the saying sometimes attributed to Voltaire " I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. " |

hmmm yes..I didn't do brilliantly in the Occupations challenge..but what made me shrug it off as a lost cause, was the DNMC comment I got: I am a mother and homeschool my children, and I took a photo of my daughter in a field of lavendar: "I Nurture People Seedlings"...how did this not meet the challenge?
I hear you Ursula. This last week I've held back more than a few times when voting a 3 (and even on 4's and 5's that needed some criticism), simply because I didn't feel like getting a response mail to justify whatever I didn't like about an image. The response mails are intimidating. I have a picture up and running at the moment that I am ever so proud of, and there have been 35 comments so far. Roughly 4 of them have irked me because they show the viewer hasn't taken time to really look at the picture...I have no desire to contact them and set them straight..when the voting is over and they're really interested they can have a look at my original notes and find out more...but that's their prerogative.

I believe all art is open to interpretation. I, for one, assumed the photographer was a gardener ... |

What would your thoughts have been had the photo been titled " Nature Photography" would you have still questioned her occupation, and the reason for entering the photo?. |

You've entered nearly 80 challenges...surely you understand by now that not every single person on the site is going to love and agree with every entry? What's up with all the recent threads complaining about how people vote when you're scoring just fine then? |
