This question is being asked for my father:

Has anyone had any experience buying from any of the many Chinese Ebay merchants? My dad is looking to buy a relatively cheap lens that is $60 less from several of these stores.

I didn't get any specific names from him due to the fact that he was driving and looking at birds in a field. He saw a Prairie Falcon sitting still on a pole and then the phone call was soon ended, heh.

So, Chinese Ebay Dealers:

Ones to avoid?
Ones you've had positive exerpiences with?

I have used Hong Kong sellers a few times, for filter, lens hood, etc. No problems, just like other sellers really. Check out feedback and watch out for import duties, taxes etc. Urgalaxy have 99.3%, fast delivery and branded Canon lens hood.

You cna save yourself alot buying via Hong Kong, just check carefully first and pay with Paypal. Hope this helps.

I've just ordered a 30D from DIGITAL-REV a HongKong seller. And am getting finances ready to order the rest of my dream, :P

I@ll keep you posted, but it's all insured for each step basically and worked out about £600 cheaper buying everything from him instead of a UK seller, and i get a 3 year international warrenty from him, rather than the standard one year.

Yep, Digit-Rev is one of the biggest photographic sellers. Good reputation and quality goods. That is a great price, but be aware you may have to pay duty and VAT on reciept to courier. Look forward to hearing the outcome. Good Luck.

Hi,
I got my 4ch radio slaves from a HongKong seller with no problem. I got them in about two weeks and they seem to work well.

I got my light tent from one, don't remember the name though. I only paid $5, has 4 background inserts and it's 48"x48". They labeled it "gift" when they shipped it. Received it in about 8 days.

Be careful about packages labelled 'gift', customs are well aware of who is shipping what around the world on ebay. You can still get stung for duties, but most low price items get thru easily. All they want are the high cost item that lose them 25% duty.

They pay that for you, providing you can prove how much you had to pay with a receipt.

Yep, I have seen and considered buying from them, I noticed they offer a refund in the event of duties and tax. Never actually bought from them, but a lot of people have and they seem well satisfied. I look forward to seeing how you get on with the 30D. I jumped from 300D to 30D and I am still coming to terms with it after 3 months, altho haven't had a lot of time due to moving house. Lovely bit of kit to hang onto, must get that battery grip!!

I'm awaiting a new camera from DigitalRev. The listing on eBay stated that there would be no delays on equipment ordered over the Christmas holiday. Truth of the matter is that I'm still waiting to hear that it has been dispatched a week after paying by PayPal. I've had two responses to my emails, both telling me that my order is actually being processed, the first one even informed me that there would be a delay, due to the holiday period. A bit of a foul-up their end in my opinion. They've had my money for a week and I've not even got a sniff of the new toy.

I've not bought anything for ages from Hong Kong but always used Albert at Kea-Photo (search for him on Ebay he always seems to be around to answer any questions and I found the service second to non and now buy direct from him. Best delivery time I had was ordered Friday night and delivered to my door at 07:00am on the Monday!!!

I did pay duty on my 17-40F/4L but even after duty and postage I saved 100UK pounds.

I have used DIGITALREV several times for major purchases on lenses...a Sigma 50-500, a 105 2.8 macro, an SB600 flash, a 2X teleconverter, a 70-200 2.8 and maybe a couple of other things...ultra fast and ultra reliable and no problems whatsoever. Highly recomended. Prices are amazing compared to the shops on most things...I ordered my flash for half the price of the shops here on a Friday and had a knock on the door at 7am on the Monday.

The only thing that caused me problems was my 50-500 lens. I had to go to customs and pay duty, and it arrived the afternoon before a big trip to Africa (I was really sweating on it!). I cleared it from customs at around 4:30pm, and they shut at 5! I was flying the next morning at 6am. Even with the duty, I still saved $500.
