Jeff, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I spent much of the afternoon reading that and following the trails that lead from it. Very worthwhile -- like spending the afternoon in a photography seminar.

Alan, please take care of your family first. This Web site, and indeed the rest of the world, will still be here afterwards. The reverse isn't necessarily true. I'm sending good thoughts your way.

This is a note to our newer members about scoring trends during voting.

It's rarely worth looking at scores for about 24 hours. Almost every challenge I've been in, the first few votes are very high and then generally plummet for the first day. Then they generally stay stable or rise until the final night, when they often climb a bit. I guess the same people tend to vote on each day, and the first nighters have different, harsher standards than most.

So although it's nice to be above 6 after 5 votes or so, don't get your hopes up. Similarly, if it's 4, don't despair. Just wait about a day to get a sense of where things are really going.

On the flip side, once you hit 100 votes, things settle down, and after 150, it's rare to see things go even 0.1 either direction, with 0.2 being really rare.

Good! :)

Now you know the kind of thing I read to come up with my suggestions; none of it was original to me!

alans_world keep us posted on how everything is going with your family, my best wishes are with you! As levyj413 says, DPC and Team Suck will still be here and rooting for you.

NikonJeb you may very well be in ribbon territory. At the very least, I'll bet you'll make top 10 and get a little star in your profile. I can't wait to see your shot!

I just entered Songs with the weirdest photo I've ever taken. Totally a new approach for me. I'm expecting a moderate score at best - technically I think the photo is okay, but artistically... well, you'll either love it or hate it. And levyj413 I promise it does meet the challenge this time :-)

xianart I love your dark, moody photos. Don't sell out on us :-) I do understand wanting that high score now and again with a crowd-pleaser though.

I'm in Black&White. Most of you will recognise my model, lol. I'm sure I'll finish towards the bottom of the pack since I don't have a studio, or lights, or backdrops, or well you get the picture. It's OK, we had fun.

With those titles, I think it will be a naughty, naughty challenge! LOL. I'm sure we'll all love it ;P

And Catherine, you have your own little star in your profile now. Congrats!

Okay, I'm in song titles. For the sake of my models, I hope it does well.

Meanwhile, if you'd care to help me figure out how best to do a shot of my models' hands, I'd appreciate it! Here's the thread:

Song Title - 4.5

I tell ya, I'm on a roll!

I have a great idea for match!! Well I'm not sure how it'll be received but it doesn't matter as it has (yes, past tense) been very very very fun to photograph and think about and yay!!

b&w portrait 5.5 but it wont hold.
i just looked and there are some great shots in this challenge
01/10/2007 12:38:42 AM · #692
I'm going to bed. The first vote on my B/W Portrait was 5 and the second vote was 1. No explanation. It's hard to recover a decent average after something like that.

OK, I looked at the thumbs for Songs, and my score is pretty accurate. There are some very good entries - quite creative! And in retrospect, mine really does suck. Live and learn. :-) (Though really you'd think I'd have figured that out by now... I *knew* not to enter it...)

One thing is starting to nark me lately - it's when people only mark comments as "useful" if they are positive, suck up, type comments. Crits that say negative things just get left, even if they are actually showing how to improve.

I used to be amused by this as I would browse through photos, but lately it's beginning to be a "thing that I don't much like". I mean, do people not gain anything from a negative crit? Are some folk's egos so fragile?
01/10/2007 02:26:50 AM · #695
Some folks just don't like criticism, or the particular angle of the criticism. I have one I haven't marked (but will do so eventually) that simply reads "Bird poop". I'm not entirely sure how to take that, but I guess it's helpful?

I've turned scores off. It's definitely one of those weeks I should have shot for the challenge then not entered.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about the sort of comment where someone just basically says "your photo is rubbish", I'm talking about things like you'll see say five comments on a shot that will say something inane like "nice piece of fluff" that are marked as helpful, and on that same shot you might see a comment that says "you have a nice piece of fluff, but the sharpness seems a bit off, and you seem to have chosen a very shallow depth of field that doesn't quite work" and that will be left.

I'm thinkin' that it's *SO* OOB that a visiting troop of trolls has been whipped into a voting frenzy......methinks they *DON'T* like it......8>)

So is there a Suckie award for the entry that sucks the most?

I think I'm gonna have that one nailed!!!!

This is my worst score EVER!!!!

I may have out-clevered myself right down the tubes!

The funny thing is that all the comments are good ones.

I still like it, oddly enough and it even kind of amuses me the it has upset some voters.

Side Note: I just voted on a B&W entry that I think is possibly one of the finest pics I have ever seen!

How do you determine that?

I'd love to know how the votes are going.

Jeb - it's math, not magic. If you keep hitting the update button often enough you can see the scores change as votes come in. Lot of folks have spreadsheets where they type in each change as they see it and it tells you the vote.

For instance if you hit update, it shows 1 vote, score is a 5, then hit update and it shows 2 votes, score is a 5.5, you just received a 5 followed by a 6 (which would be good!) However if that first vote is a 5, then you hit update and have 2 votes and a score of 3, your second vote was a 1 (which would not be good.)

I just turn scores off when they're particularly uninspiring (like now, with a sub-5 score going in Songs) and I don't have a copy of a spreadsheet - someone else may. Even when my scores are decent I don't hit update. I just let it update on the hour when the site does it.

Oh.....

I can do that.....I just thought maybe there was some preference I could set that would tell me that.

I haven't been a real update button banger 'til my procrastination entry, and that one has made me kinda twitch since I'm headed steadily towards a seven.....in the most tantalizing, torturously slow manner!

I'm just so excited I can't help myself!

Oh, and you can't touch my B&W entry for suckage! Amateur!!!!
