I am going to fly over Mt. St. Helens in Oregon in January, possibly a once in a life time trip. I have a D50 with the kit lens.

I would like any advice so I can take the best pictures while I am up in the air. It will be during daylight. I am worried about being too bright, possible glare ,form the window... (is there anything else I am should be worried about?)

Do I need any extra gear? i.e. any filters, should I rent a special lens? If so what kind? (brand, make, model?)

This isn't necessarily equipment oriented, but shoot with a polarizer (assuming the window isn't polarized itself, which can make for some wonky lns effects) and a super-fast shutter and you should get some nice shots. Might bump in-camera saturation up a notch to compensate for midday washing out.

You might think about renting a Nikon 12-24mm f/4. This is a great ultra-wide zoom lens. It should give you some great views that narrower lenses cannot capture.

A friendly bump for some more opinions. :)

Is it a tour flight of some sort or are you just flying over that direction into Washington?

Reflections and dirt will be your main problems when photographing thru a window. Reflections can be handled by pressing the lens right up against the glass. Also, bringing a foam piece large enough to cover the glass around the lens with a hole cut in it for the lens to fit thru. This will help block the light from the cabin reflecting back thru the glass. As for the dirt, bring some moist towellettes and clean the inside glass -- not much you can do about the outside. :P
