OK, this is the first time I am ranting about this kind of thing. I am generally very happy with my scores (even the lower ones). I set a high standard for myself (sometimes perphaps too high).

Well this time my heart is breaking. My score started well above 7 in the "shadows 2" challenge (I got so excited). It held there for a day or so with many votes and then suddenly took a drop of over a 1.5 points. This could mean that some people really liked it, and then decided that maybe they don't like it anymore... Suits me right doing artsy stuff :-(((

I don't even want to look at my score now. It's dropping with every vote. I am ready to cry now - need big hug.

HUGS!! HUGS!! HUGS!!
Sometimes I wonder if I wouldn't be better off not knowing until it is all over.

Hi Nella,

a very big hug from me! =)

I had a similar experience on the recent Science challenge, however I must admit that I became very much detached by the outcome of my photos and you may well know why (for whoever else read this, it has nothing to do with photography or DPC).

I don't know which is your photo but I am sure that is an excellent one, so there is no need for bad feelings whatever the final outcome.

Ciao

Antonio

I'm sorry to hear that your entry is going through a hard time :)
I know it is hard to get use to.
I had several entries for Shadows II and I feel I picked one I did not like as much as the others, I think it was for fear of my better entries getting hammered :)
Keep your chin up you can get them the next time.

What do you mean when you say 'started out'? After one vote? Two votes? I ask because I hear this a lot. If my first vote that I received on a photo was a 2, I wouldn't want to assume too much about my final score. I like to wait until at least half the votes are in before I make a guess at where I will finish. I usually don't move more than .1 in either direction after that.

jmsetzler - it was not after one or two votes, it was after 30 votes or more. the score held up until today. I think people are in pissy mood today (or I am just kidding myself). Or maybe my photo is not that great after all.

I am going to have a big dish of chocolate icecream - that usually helps a bit. :-))

bamaster - that's a good one. poor kid. my son is sometimes clumsy too, but he usually shakes it off and laughs. so far no broken bones (in 12 years of his life).

Yeah, them little ones bounce pretty good. I think it's so funny that this kid is holding his nose the whole way. My mom said I fell out of moving car when I was little... playing with the door handle... bounced like a ball she said... 'splains a few things.

Timmi, i had an actual dream that my score for shadows was in the 8's, i am so proud of it, when i woke up and checked monday morning it was in the low 4's!!! Thats what i get for getting artsy also.

GRRRRRRRRR!

Ice cream might help me too.

I have found the trick around this score fluctuation thing, it's easy ....

Do really average pics! People then all give you really average scores, always a 4, 5 or 6. The scors opens around the same mark as it remains all the way through.

It's really a very clever solution indeed :) So you see, that is why my photos score the way they do, it is deliberate!

Small downside though I admit is that, well, you get a very average score ;)

I don't know, if it's any consolation, Timmi, but my better photos routinely get hammered. The more mediocre ones, more often than not, receive an unduly high rating.

Zeuszen I agree. My "Back to School" entry was by my own admittance bad shot. I shot it in the last 15 minutes before submission deadline. I didn't expect much at all and thought people would score it low, but to my amazement it scored over 5. So go figure. I will never figure out what people like.

Slowly I am going to start shooting photos that I like and that make me happy, regardless of how they will score here. I think I need less restriction to grow as a photographer.
