| my entry is down to 533 x 401 but when i upload it I get the "too large" message. |

there is not only a print size but a physical memory limit too of 150kb
Use photoshop save for web command and you will find you can reduce down to right sizes easily

get it back to 640 pixels
Image, Mode, make sure it's set to 8 bit and flattened, not in layers still.
Save for web, click on the little triangle near the Optimize text in the upper right, select optimize to file size, type in 150 and hit ok.

while your pixels might be the right amount, the file size might still be too big. I reduce to match the reguired file size (150K? I think). I did it trial and error. GOOD LUCK with your time!

Go to Image/Mode....tell me what bits/channel it is on.
