Art thinks a little motion blur in photojournalism can be a good thing. Art also wonders if the Mattel Barbie Photo Designer Digital Camera even has an f/8 / F8 / f/8 / f8.0 / F/8.0 setting. Art is also not my real name, nor a reflection of my images. |
yes it does! in fact, it is fixed at f8 all the time (the designers of this cam probably read a lot about the "magic f8" in some photography forums too!) |

Jhonan, re "hyperfocal" Look on top most SLR lenses, and you will see a series of markings, usually right behind the focus ring, with numbers corresponding to the aperture "stops". When the infinity dot on the focus ring is aligned with the number of the chosen aperture, then everything from infinity back to the range reading on the focus ring corresponding to he second mark for the chosen aperture on the lens will be "reasonably" in focus. Notice that the f/ markings at the focus ring get wider apart as the aperture gets smaller. Back before SLR's, that was the way you focused to shoot.

f/8 challenge suggestion :) Suggested a few months back.

That's correct :-)

So why don't camera's (mine, anyway) have a button to "Set to HF at current zoom" alongside the Manual Focus button? |

Some effectively do (only more so) It's called 'DEP' mode. You say I want this point and this point in focus - what aperture should I use - it picks the aperture and sets the focus.
PITA to use normally, but effectively what you are asking for.

Isn't that what the "Landscape" mode in many cameras do? |

Could be -- I'll have to check. I've never used most of the "modes" on my camera. |

Now that would make an interesting challenge... "f/8 @ 1/125". |
Yes it would, wouldn't it? |
I can hear the Nikonians starting to gnash their teeth...
f/8 @ 1/125 @ ISO 100 would the full thing, but you'd need a camera that has an ISO 100 setting :) |
.
So really get the Nikonians upset, make the challenge; f/8 1/125 sec and full sensor only ;) |

There are different ways to set the HF point, depending on the type of camera and lense you use.
- With "P&S" cameras you can always get the HF point by choosing the "Portrait & Landscape" mode. In this mode, your camera will automatically set to HF.
- With modern auto focus lenses (with no aperture ring) there are two ways to set to HF
1. Turn to manual focus. Focus to infinity and then turn the ring just a little before infinity, or
2. Turn to manual focus. Frame your photo, find something that is about 1/3 up, from the bottom of your frame and focus on it.
From what I've heard and my experience, those are the most reliable ways to set your camera to hyper focal point. |

Here's a couple online DOF calculators:
//www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
//www.dudak.baka.com/dofcalc.html
If you play with these for a while (I like the first one) you'll get a pretty good feel for what your own lenses will do in DOF-critical situations, and then you can pretty well wing it in the field.

Because this isn't an aircraft on auto pilot man! ;-)
If you plan on exploiting hyper focal focus, you best be shooting with manual focus anyway.
Don't expect an "Easy Button" for everything.
