My son plays soccer, baseball and basketball.

They just started playing basketball just before I got my DSLR.
There first practice I don't remember just how many photos I took.
Last night (there second practice) they were in the gym for 1 1/2 hours and I took around 225 photo's.

I was not keeping track, just shot to play around with the camera, ect..
Thought I can practice when they practice and maybe when game day comes around I will be a bit better too.

So I get home and stick the card in the card ready and see there are 225 photo's downloading!

I had no idea I had taken that many.

This got me to wondering just how many I can plan on taking per game and how many other people are taking at games.

Even though I shot a ton, most were out of focus and many more were things like players arm blocking other players faces, heads turned away, ect..

Love the action of the came and shooting my 5 burst shots. :)

So much fun, can't wait to be outside shooting the baseball and soccer games.

So do you go nuts taking photo's at the game?

In college, I used to take about 6-8 24 exposure rolls at each college basketball game I shot. Of which, I'd use maybe a total of two for the paper :-)

This is why I don't shoot that many at sporting events. I shot two basketball games last night. One in its entirety and the first half of another. I made 64 photos total.

This past year I shot a bunch of baseball games. On the average I shot about 250 shots - some were closeups up different players batting, catching, pitching, etc. I tend to shoot alot of the "action shots" of kids sliding into base, etc. because the parents love those shots but can't take them. Shooting those types of shots means that I'm often in continuous burst mode to capture the action. Long story short...yes, I take *at least* that many shots at any given game!

The brute force method works. I just choose the other route. I a much higher percentage of good photos. I actually get about the same number of good photos either way I go.

I think as you take more pictures at games you will see what works and what doesn't and you will be able to better anticipate the action. Those who take a lot of school sports learn to anticipate where and when you need to trip that shutter. When my kids were in school I took lots of pictures and would then separate the pictures into files for each kid on the team and burn cd's for each player of their own pictures to give them at the end of the season. It was just something I liked to do and the kids seemed to really appreciate it. We live in an area where a lot of parent work shifts and are not always able to attend all the games. It's kind of a mom thing to do. Now that my youngest son is away at college, I'm a freelance photographer for the local paper and am branching out into sports he didn't play. There is a learning curve there. I take fewer pictures because I'm on a deadline and it takes too much time to go through hundreds of images to pick a few to send in.

I'd say since you are taking pictures of your own child, fire away. You are not spending money on film. And they grow up and leave home way too soon. Trust me, you won't regret it. (And um, to answer your question, I've taken as many as 1,000 at a soccer match and at least as many at wrestling tournaments. And I got some darn good ones too :)) So yes, I guess you could say when my own child is playing, I go a little nuts with the shooting. Again, it's a mom thing.

My husband plays cricket for a 1 day side here and I take shots every week for their website. I used to shoot in jpg and come away with a couple of hundred shots, but after switching to RAW, I'm a little more selective about what I snap and generally take around 90 - 100. Of which, maybe a quarter will make it to the website. I'm certain that if I was shooting a rugby match, there'd be loads more though.

Cricket is not the most action-packed game, but it's everything to these guys and they get a kick out of seeing photos of themselves bowling, batting, taking a wicket... and of course, whatever else I may catch them doing ;) Boy, I've learned a hell of a lot about white balance and exposure along the way and always I look forward to every season. I guess action/sport photography is addictive :)

When I shoot Steelers games, I usually take 500-ish. Granted, about 480 of them suck, but what're ya gonna do... :)

Depending on the sport I average about 125-150 per game or match.
