There are some really awesome pictures in the gallery. I am just curious if people, particularly the ribbon winners, have tried selling their winning photos outside of DPCPrints, either in stock photo sites or just framing them and selling them at a craft fair or to local businesses. And the nagging question is why nobody in this community has made an effort to market the talent here. :)

I was all ready to say "yes! yes I have" but then I read the "outside of DPC prints part" and nope. I haven't. haven't tried. I don't think I fall into the category of one of those thats so good as to answer the last question you asked. maybe some day. :P

Yes, my sole ribbon a few times.

edit: and probably like a lot of other folks here, lots of non-ribbon shots do exceedingly well outside the dpc fishbowl as well

I've sold a handful of framed prints of one of my challenge entries.

EDIT:
This one to be precise...

Oh, sure, I've sold copies of several of my Challenge entries - no ribbon winners yet - because I don't have any ribbons.

But I and 4 other photographers opened a Gallery last March and quite a few of my DPC entries end up on the walls.

Just off hand, I've sold several copies of this one(matted & framed - I have 2 sizes):

and last Sunday a copy of this one went out the door (print only, 10x13):

yep - I've sold quite a few to tourists and locals of my only ribbon. Enough to buy a new lens for christmas.

This is an excellent thread. Perhaps when responding, it would be nice if everyone could add how they sold them. For example... venue, framed and matted, sizes and prices etc. Could be alot of help for alot of people... :)

Alice,

Wow, that looks like a very nice setup!

Have you recruited DPC photographers to exhibit their work? Wow, it would be awesome if you devote a wall to DPC photographers (maybe a week out of a month or something like that).

Care to share your experience being on the gallery end of photography or maybe advice for others here (absolutely not me) on how to approach other gallery owners for exhibiting their images?

I'm with you... quite a few of my challenge entries (none of which are ribbons) go to stock sites and I do sell some enlargements here and there too.

Allan, it's been a learning experience all the way. The Gallery is called A Woman's Eye, (AWE Gallery) and we are open on weekends and by appointment. We are located in an abandoned chapel attached to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church and the pastor of that church is one of us. (as an aside, none of the rest of us are associated with the church)

We started out with our own mailing lists of around 500 names and have added to that list with walk-ins and other interested folks. We have done some very local advertising in neighborhood papers, and have sponsored special events, such as several musical events, a book signing and coming in January an exhibition by California Natural Science Illustrators. Obviously, our budget is tiny. But these events have been draws and when people see our work they buy it! (how nice!)

We have some talented DPCers in the Bay Area, and Allan, I simply had not thought about including them in an exhibit. This might well be something to think about.

How to get an exhibit in a Gallery? Depends, I suppose. Someone new, like us, would be more likely to be responsive than an established gallery to showing new work.

Okay, I don't want to hijack this thread. Unless it's okay with the OP, but meanwhile, Allan, since you're in Sacramento, if you get a chance to come over this way, PM me and I'd be delighted to show you around the gallery. I live about 5 minutes away from it.

PS, I see, Allan, you are the OP, so this hijack is probably okay with you.
;-)

Hijack away. I am very interested in your experience and I am sure many people are interested in your advice as well. I think most people here are interested in one way or another monetize their hobby, if for nothing else, to get some new equipment or add that extra dimension of challenge. :) Thank you so much for sharing.

I visited your website and have wrote down your address. I go down to the bay pretty much every other week to visit my friends and family there. I will certainly drop by the next time I am in SF.

My first ribbon was this

and I sold limited use to an ad agency somewhere in NY. They were supposed to send me the brochure that it was on, and a url for the website it was used on, but they never did. However, they did send me a check, so that was cool . . .

I sell mine as stock photos, yes. Mostly as catalog covers. No ribbon here though!

Not a ribbon winner but sold enough to pay for a Canon 5D ;) and the LDS Church has asked for release so they can use it as wanted ... I gave it to them ;) I figured a for a new Canon 5D it was time to start giving it away.

Super. As I said, PM me and I'll be sure to be there to show you around.

Meanwhile, and I'll post it closer to the date, AWE Gallery will host a reception on Saturday, January 13 (12:00-5;00pm) for the California Chapter of The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators whose work will be on exhibit in part of the Gallery for a couple of weeks.

So, save the date.

(More on the serendipity of this venture: One of us is a crackerjack accounting type who takes care of the books, another is a former legal aide who took care of the gov. paperwork, and a third is conversant with graphic design and some web stuff. I'm the one who has experience in (amateur)p.r. The fifth one has contacts that are invaluable as well as doing everything that needs doing.)

I've mostly sold non-ribbon winners, several hundred dollars each time.

None of my ribbon winners have sold though.

I haven't sold this one on DPC Prints but on the outside it's been having a nice run.

These two have been pretty popular...

My highest score

What's the legality on reselling all those ads ? Is it just fine for editorial usage I suppose ?

I'll find out when they come after me but I assume nobody will complain. It's a public shot and it's not sold commercially so based on some recent rulings, I see nothing wrong....unless you find something that I'm not aware of.

I think if it is being sold as art or editorial stock it is fine, but would be a problem for commercial/ advertising usage - I think, but I'm not a lawyer ;)

Right - but that is people in Times Sq, not the advertising hoardings - and again, it was just for art usage, not commercial. So I would still say what I'd said before. Fine for art or editorial, but not for commercial/ advertising.
