Let's try it... and see what we get :-)

Thanks, but no thanks. It's nice to have a subject free challenge for us regular folks (non-Photoshop pros) on a monthly basis.
I for one, don't have the time, skills, nor desire to try and play in that arena (multiple image art).
Keep the monthly Free Study available to those that enjoy regular photography... |

With all due respect, just because the tools are available doesn't mean you are required to use them.
IMO well done "regular photogrpahy" will outscore any but the very best of composite images.

That's true, many times I've entered an Advanced Editing ruleset challenge with a photo that would still be Basic Editing legal.
However, I can't see how it's fair to put regular photos in with a bunch of fake "composite" images for a challenge.
The Free Study only comes once a month. I'd prefer to keep that as is. If the artsy/composite types need more challenges, then add more of those, but don't take away from those that enjoy regular photography.
Edit to add, there's always this site for photoshop "artists": Worth1000.com

I totally agree here - let the Monthly Free Study stay as it is...

I like the idea and don't see a problem with it once in a while. Heck free studies might as well be called landscape anyway. :-P

Yes, see, I wasn't advocating every Free Study be Expert Editing, just this January, just to let us play. :-)

5 of the top 10 finishers were not landscapes. :D |

Well, there certainly would be a whole lot LESS entries to view/vote on. |

Normally January will be the best of for the entire year, and I do hope it stays as just advanced editing. Anyway, as to free studies, I think that it has become less interesting just because I don't have landscapes that are worth being in the top 5, or even in the top 50, so why bother entering? I know that the folks here seem to love them, but it puts many of us at a disadvantage who don't live near these sweeping vistas. So if they want to do some with expert editing, I don't have a problem since I won't be entering anyway.

Figured someone would say that. :D No, it's not bad if you don't mind alienating a good portion of the DPC community. |

I like the idea using expert editing but don't we always run the Best of the Year challenge during January? Do we really want two monster challenges going at the same time along with everything else? Maybe have this for February?
ETA: The last free study averaged only 160 or so votes per entry. To have those two plus everything else running at the same time some entries may not even get 100 votes, which I think would be a very bad thing.

You make valid points there... perhaps better to wait for Feb, or let us go hog wild for The Best of '06.

also, won't some of the entries have to be validated by the site council as to whether they are legal or not.
i'm sure they would get hundreds to validate in a study that size?

Sure but if that's the case why have expert editing at all. |

I think expert editing challenges should have less request for validation. Not much is illegal. Really, the only request that would need to be researched is for valid EXIF dates.

I don't know, but there's a big difference between 600+ entries in a challenge and 200+ one.

I don't know about that.
just think of some of the wizards of photoshop around here, I'm sure they'd get plenty of requests for validation.
But as usual, what do I know :-) ?

I understand but to be able to let your imagination run wild, regardless of how many entries, would produce some amazing work that I for one would love to see. And like Leroy said validations would most likely be smaller under the Expert editing rules. |

Hmm, I can see a lot of validation request being made and not for exif data. You still can't use clip art or multiple photos and the texture rule I'm sure not everyone has figured out yet so there could be some slip ups with all of that. We'll see how Sky goes but I bet we'd get more validations not less especially starting out.

That could likely make it as "THE Understatement of the Year"
