I see a lot of posts in the forums and I get asked directly quite a bit, so I thought I would post some comments and responses to:

"I want to upgrade my camera... What should I buy?"

The most important item to consider when you decide to upgrade is WHY you are upgrading. Are you no longer happy with your current camera? If not, you should define WHY. Does it not do things you need/want to do? Make a specific list of these things. You need this list when shopping for a new camera. You MUST make sure that whatever you buy will meet this list of needs.

After you have this list of 'needs and wants', decide how much money you are willing to spend. This is a hobby for most of us and we are not making a significant or any income from it. However, since it IS a hobby and something we do for enjoyment, it's not a great idea to cut corners. You will ultimately be unhappy if you do.

Now we have our list of needs and a budget to work with. When you post your question "What camera should I buy?", you now have some useful information to provide with your request. Reword your question to say:

I am ready to upgrade my camera because it won't do this, this, that, this, and that, and I really wanna be able to do those things. I have this much money to spends. Please suggest some cameras that fit my needs and my budget.

Don't get bitten by the 'latest and greatest' syndrome. Your camera may not be the newest model with all the new (and usually insignificant) bells and whistles. There haven't been but a few relatively significant enhancements in the consumer digital camera market in the last two years.

John, sound advice.

Thanks, John. I have been bitten by the 10D bug for some time now. Then, the 300D came out, and I started investigating that instead. These are both great cameras, but I haven't the money for either of them. This advice rings true... I need to explore some more... not only what I am looking for in a camera, but also comparing that to my needs, and my ability. Then I read on dpreview that there is new technology breaking ground again. Perhaps one more year waiting won't kill me, and will give me a chance to persue it in a rational way rather than an emotional way.

With me upgrading is adding to present camera, not going out and buying a new one. I love my little PowerShot A40, so my upgrades will be a lens adapter, a Nikon 4T close-up lens, and maybe a teleconverter. I have nothing against DSLR's but they are not for me. For one thing price. I'm not just talking camera but lenses, not owning a lens that will work with one. Also the tripod that I use for my little 8-some oz camera would have to be replaced, not to mention my camera bag and a few other insidentals
