Just looking for some advice on lighting stands (boring I know). This seems to be a pretty decent set of features for the price [$40+ship each] => Impact Air-Cushioned Heavy Duty Light Stand - Black, 9.5'.

To start with I plan to get a shoot-thru brolly cause they are pretty cheap (still looking) and use my old EZ flash into the brolly and upgrade to an EX flash for the camera (I am scratching my head trying to justify the 580 but looking more like the 430 right now).

Not sure if B&H allow hotlinks but as a test...... What do you know - Not sure if they should buit I guess it's advertising :-)

The thing to watch for on stands is plastic parts in high stress areas. The really cheap stands will use cheap plastic instead of aluminum in the sleeves where the knobs are to adjust the height or in the bracket where the legs or leg spreaders meet in the center.

Oh yeah, the air cushioned stands are totally worth it.

I have two of them and use them with a monolight and softbox without any problems. The height is pretty good and they balance well. I havent had any issues with the knobs or brackets, but I dont tend to adjust them too much or put them up and down a lot.

AlienBees has some decently priced Brollies that I was looking at the other day.

The stand you're looking at is the shorter version of the one Alien Bees sells with it's strobes. It works, there's nothing fancy about it but it gets the job done. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
