Okay, I know the endless litany of "WHAT DO I CHARGE, QUICK!!" threads may get a little old to you guys, but I thought I'd run this by you.

We have a gig to do some product photography for a lady who needs some ad photo's for her business. I thought about Rights Managed stuff, but keeping track of it all just didn't seem worth the hassle, and the price sheets for it seems prohibitive for her. SO I looked at some RF price sheets from Fotosearch, and this is what I came up with (plus I copied thier pop-up RF contract ;-D )

Low resolution
72DPI ~5x7" / RGB USD $99.00

Medium Resolution
150 dpi ~8x10 / RGB USD $199.00

High Resolution
300 dpi ~16x20 / RGB USD $269.00

Or somethin like that. (I edited it a little)

The contract gives provisions for allowing use to a web designer or her publisher when she chooses one and such.

Is this too much? These are per image.

Also, should I put a time limit on the RF usage?

How many things does she have for you to shoot?

Are you setting up "styled" shots or would you be able to setup the lighting once on a plain sweep or in a light tent and crank them out one after the other without much, if any adjustment in between? The first will cost more, the second not as much, especially if she has a lot of items to shoot.

You can negotiate usage for whatever time period you want, but the longer the term, the more you should charge.

She may not want to buy perpetual rights for a shot that has a usable life of 3-4 months.

Doh! I hadn't even thought about a "sitting fee" per object. I think there won't be more than 10 items this time, so somewhere between $75-100 for the first hour seem reasonable to me.

Yeah, she's an acquaintance of ours, so I'll probably be showing her the price list and telling her something like I'll give you 50% off or something, just because you're you.

I may just give her perpetual because this is our first paid shoot for this type of thing (not that I haven't done enough for DPC stuff).

It's Cakes by the way, she makes and sells the best gourmet cakes you've ever tasted.

I wouldn't give her a discount, give her something extra, like a print or 5 to hang in her shop.

If the cakes are as tasty as you say, maybe you could barter some of the cost for a cake or two. My wife does stuff like that all the time.

Generally for work like this you have a 'day rate' or hourly rate and estimate the time to shoot (travel, set up and adjustment of the "set", tear down, tie to shoot all the items, etc - allow time for them to be there and chat to you, etc)
then there is a per-image fee for all the images they actually get, and sometimes a few per image used on top of that (and it varies by usage).

the day rate is the sitting fee/creative fee and gets them proofs.
the per-image is the final PP work and CD creation (or whatever they want their final images in/as).

I quoted a local shop $90/ hour plus $10/image figureing 25 items and 3 to 4 hours (5 mins / item) (for crystals and jewlery) and he wants 25k web sized files. Estimate came to about $600. I think he was not expecting that, but i make that shooting weddings or HS seniors or even christmas pets, so why give him some special deal?

I fully agree with Prof-Fate and that is how I charge for work like this. You set a day rate. Basically, your just shooting product. Images you'll never re-use except to show potential clients. My day rate begins at $1000 and goes up from there, depending on the usage/right the client wants. Product for a local business should be on the cheap side, product shoots for a company selling national or world wide would be on the higher side.
