Recently I replaced my D70 with a D200. I loved my D70, great camera, but needed the added features of the D200. I am not getting nearly as good of results as easily as I did with my D70 though. It could be that I suck, it could be that I don't know how to use my camera yet, it could be the 10MP sensor shows more flaws in cheap lenses or it could be I got a lemon. I'm trying to rule out that I got a lemon.

So I'd like to test the camera hardware to make sure it's functioning properly but don't know how / where to start. Any suggestions?

Since getting the D200 I mainly seem to be struggling with exposure (blown highlights in particular) and focus. Now granted I've mainly shot stuff in harsh lighting conditions (stage light) since I got it 2 weeks ago but it's just not working out as naturally as the D70 did for me.

Bright even lighting

test subjects with 'good' contrast (news papers, CD covers that sort of thing.

Set it up at a 'sensible' distance from the camera (i.e., 4-6feet away - remember, in good light.

Use a tripod. Use a remote release if you have one, or the inbuild timer if you don't.

It can be worth setting a 'staggered' target of CDs or something if you are concerned about back/forward focus.

Shoot an evenly illuminated white wall if you are worried about exposure. it should end up grey, somewhere to the center left of your histogram.

That's a few ideas at least.

which settings are you using ?

if you keep to center focus spot & be sure you have the vibration delay off you should get rock solid images ...

I've tried them all with both AF-S and AF-C. It just seems more hit or miss than I had with my D70 (using the same lenses) especially if the subject is moving. I rarely use the center spot for focusing.

I'm going to shoot some tests tonight.

i typically use the center & then move to compose
i find that gives me better focus
also 'single area focus' as opposed to most other methods
