Got my Lightsphere cloud today in the mail, decided to give it a shot :)

New test, on eye level this time.

Lightsphere with Dome

Lightsphere with Dome removed, i.e. bounce.

Regular Bounce with Naked Flash

I honestly can't see any improvement over the bounced with naked flash...actually, if you look at the area behind the back part of the barrel of the gun, the lack of shadow in the bounced naked flash is quite a bit better (no shadow), IMO.

I looked back and forth quite a bit. Personally I liked the bounced naked flash the best too. Though the lightsphere shots do show some more shadow on the wall and specular highlight detail on the gun, if that's what you prefer. The bounced bare flash doesn't provide any light from the camera origin point, so no bounced specular highlights. I wonder what the bare flash with small index card behind would show - the same, or more specularity than the dome, I expect.

Depends what look you are going for - hopefully we can all agree that the straight on flash is the worst though :) The bounced naked flash appears a bit lifeless for metal/ reflective surfaces though, so the lightsphere adding some of that specularity back in does help.

The dome on seems to have warmed up the whites a bit.

You need a clamping feedneck, new regulator and trigger. And get rid of that drop :)

Added: Naked flash bounce does look the best.

New test is up... definitely different results.

Still the same general result though.

Full on, non bounced camera flash is nasty. Lots of specular, no diffuse lighting.

Naked bounced flash is all diffuse, no specular

Lightsphere adds in a bit of specular reflection,

dome adds more specular reflection, that I don't particularly like in this test case, but would probably look good say reflected in someone's eye, compared to the dead eyes that plain bounced flash gives.

So you can get more shadow/ reflection from camera PoV with the dome on.

Still would love to see a version with a white index card/ business card held behind the flash to bounce some light forward (or a white spoon for that matter)

The key is that specular catchlight getting projected from the flash/camera viewpoint, forward.

I did the test with such this highly reflective material to get an idea of light distribution and I'm quite happy with the results it gives with bounce. I'll have to test with some real people at a real event once I get a chance (next week or so).
