I'll put in another plug for Spyro for the kids. My daughter LOVES Spyro, and is playing it as I'm typing this. It's a fun game, and I don't mind playing it once in a while with her. Pretty cool game.

Another thing you might consider is the wireless controllers. It's SO nice not having to monkey with the wires all the time!

Get a PSP, it's a PS2 compacted into a hand held..

Granted their aren't that many games for it right now.. but there is going to be...

Edit: nevermind, you probably want a family system

i gotta second the kingdom hearts games, the first one was way more difficult then the second, so the parent might need to chime in and help the kiddies through it but its a lot of fun. Also for the kids theyll have endless hours of fun playing katamari damacy and the mkII we love katamari.

My youngest boy (6) loves Shrek 2 and Shrek Super Slam! Over The Hedge is good for young ones too!

I also highly suggest Karaoke Revolution and DDR. Great games! My kids enjoy them alot.

Also, PacMan Fever. It's a 4 player game and you play mini games to move around the board. First person "home" wins. You move spaces by winning mini games. :) They make a Shrek one like that too, we don't have it... yet!

My favorite games on the PlayStation ever are Baldur's Gate and Champions of Norrath, which is kind of what Baldur's Gate turned into. There are two of each, but you might have to look online or at a video game store which resells games to find them cause they're a little older. But they are AWESOME games! :-) If you like Diablo, they're the closest you're gonna get on the PS2.

And, if you remember Gauntlet from the old arcade games, there's a version of that for the PS2 as well.

DDR addiction

Basically a touch pad that you follow on screen arrows and you follow it by using your feet, thus the dancing part.

There are drum games, guitar games, dj mixer games, etc that uses the same types of tools as the actual users of these professions/hobbies.

Hey now...no picking on me...

This is me and my friend Jamie playing DDR on his PS2. (slightly modified, LOL) I have it at my house for XBOX. Awesome game. Still addicted. I have DDR1 and DDR2.
I also second the motion for Guitar Hero 1 and 2. Of which I also have both.
Great games... I heart them.

Thanks for the advice, we'll definitely check out some of the titles you guys have suggested. We can rent games at the local video store, so I guess we'll try B4 we buy.

We got one wirelesss controller and a 64MB memory card free when we got the system. I like the wireless, but I'm worried about it poopin' out in the middle of the action. Does that happen?

We got one game, Mortal Kombat Dimensions. Definitely not for the kids, but I loved playing the original MK.

There was a demo of an FPS game, "Area 51" I tried to play it, but it was pretty hard to control movement using both joysticks, especially while shooting. Are most FPS games that way and how long does it take to get used to using the controller that way?

Most FPS that I've played are like that, where you have to use one joystick to control YOUR movement and the other to aim the gun. It was definitely a little weird at first, but you get used to it quicker than you think. One or two solid afternoons of playing the games and you should have it down :-)

the wireless for my original xbox and gmaecube worked pretty well and rarely failed during play but in reality i had more problems with my kids jerking the controller out of my hand by tripping on the cord. both of mine were third party. if you get into games more and decide to go next gen later the next gen wireless controllers are superb.

I'd love to get a PS3, but they are not out until march in the UK, also the games work out about $100 each! I'll have to put a kidney on ebay...

Yeah - Hence the PS2 :-/ I am pretty sure eBay will de-list human organ sales :-)

Great plan Dan. I saw a couple of game cubes I went to a Xmas party for the kids. I love Mario Cart. Prolly get them for them when they're a bit older. Ebay is prolly the way to go.

There is a keyboard and mouse available for the PS2 but not sure if all fps type games would work with that setup.
