Ok I don't know what the heck is the deal, but now when I go to save a file, the jpg file format is not in the drop down menu for me to choose as a file type. Is there a setting or something perhaps that I changed by accident? Can anyone tell me how to make it show back up?

Is the image 16-bit? Jpeg is not an option for me when working on a 16-bit file.

You need to switch from 16-bit to 8-bit to save as jpeg.

Check the layers palette. Photoshop has become a little friendlier than it once was (i.e. it flattens the image automatically), but you only get one layer when you save as jpg, so you may as well merge all layers before you save, just to see if it helps.

I'd agree with this as the most likely culprit. The setting is at Image/Mode in the toolbar menu. Needs to be an 8-bit image to save as JPG. If you're working from RAW, 16-bit would be the preferred setting for generating TIFF from RAW, so that may be where it's coming from?

u can save a 16bit image as a JPEG with JPG2000

but i agree you've prolly either got layers or its 16bit colour..

As far as I know, if you try to save a complex, layered document as jpg it will just include the statement "this image must be saved as a copy in this format" (or words to that effect) and it will then save as a flattened, single-layer jpg and leave the original, layered document up on the screen. That's what it does in PS7, anyway.

OK, I was working with a 16 bit tiff that was converted to a psd. When I changed it to 8 bit I was able to save it. But the thing is, I had save a jpg version the other day of this image, but I never changed it to 8 bit. I don't know how I was able to save it last time....

But thanks everyone for the tips, they really paid off for me. :-)

Last time did you use save for web instead of just save as?

No. I made a point not to.

I don't know, it's odd.
