A REMINDER TO ALL:
To everyone posting in this thread, please take a moment to reread the Forum Rules, paying particular attention to the following:
Originally posted by Forum Rules: 10. Do not publicly accuse other participants of rules violations. If you believe a rule has been broken, report the post and do not reply.
11. Do not attack other users. This includes "calling out" specific comments or commenters in a hostile manner. Personal attacks are never appropriate in a constructive discussion. If you disagree with another participant, address their points without attacking them personally. Be aware that others may have differing opinions of a personal attack, so use care when posting. Please note that this includes publicly "calling out" commenters (whether by name or not) in a hostile way.
13. Assume good faith. When replying to a post, your reply must assume that the original poster's message was intended to be constructive and follow the rules. It's difficult to convey facial expressions or tone of voice over the forums, so a post that appears offensive may be well intentioned. If you cannot assume the original poster acted in good faith, report the post in question, and do not reply at all.
14. Above all, play nice. Be aware that the above rules are not all-inclusive. If you stir up trouble to prove a point, or engage in a pattern of disruptive behavior, we will address your actions, even if those actions do not violate any specific rule listed here. We will also handle any issues not specifically covered by the rules on a case by case basis. |
If we can put the sniping behind us, this is a useful thread. Let's keep it that way.
~Terry

thanks ClubJuggle for trying to bring back a bit of order to the thread.
In the end I went for the Nikon d200 but and trying to decide on which lens
Sigma 10-20
Tokina 12-24
Nikon 12 - 24
is the nikon worth the extra $$$?

I don't have any experience with any of those lenses (I use the Canon 10-22mm), but there's a significant difference in coverage between 10mm and 12mm. Don't let the "it's only 2mm" argument sway you: the wider the lens, the more of a difference it makes. From 10mm to 12mm is a 20% difference, and you will see that in the angular coverage. If you're really committed to extreme WA, then all other things being equal (quality of build, sharpness etc) go with the wider lens.

thanks for the input Bear_Music
I see where you are coming from with the 2mm comment. Altho from reviews I've read the sigma 10-20mm isnt as sharp as the other two.
do I go for 2mm over sharpness (if there is a sharpness issue with the sigma that is)... my brain hurts!! |

For sure, if there's a measurable, real-world difference in optical quality, go for the better glass; 12mm is still very wide, especially since the D200 is a 1.5 crop camera (the 20D is 1.6)...

mmm very difficult decision.
I think you get better pic straight from the camera with the d200 but if your pp is good that wont matter. Apparently Nikon do wider better and canon do long. Some professional types get adapter s so they can use nikon wides on their canon bodies.
The truth is their both GREAT cameras and its the man not the tool anyway!
good luck

Check the lenses thoroughly, then check them again and then buy the body to fit the ones that you think are best. Your shots will never be better than the lenses you use.
