This is the image I was working with for the light challenge. Iwas unable to get it to my liking within the rules of DPChallenge. This one is manipulated a little, beyond getting rid of the skin tones. I thought it was a fun image and thought I'd share it, even though I can't put it in the challenge.

I like the idea quite a bit but the blinds don't look very natural...

Excellent. The blue goes well with the B/W. The blue in the eyes is what really makes the image. Great work.

I would try a linear (vertical) gradient Black to Blue for the blinds.

The blinds were a grid I cut out of mat board. I wasn't really going for a venetian blind look, but I probably should if I shoot this again, since people automatically associate this with blinds.
It was fun, either way. If I had more time today, I would have shot it again and changed some things to get it DPC legal... Maybe next time.
THanks for commenting.

Do you mean a gradient on each blind from black to blue, or the blinds going from black to blue with each blind being a separate color in that gradient?

I'm visualizing it in my mind, but I'm wondering if the latter would lessen the impact of the eyes too much.

Maybe if it went blue to black (using the latter method) that would keep the general blinds feel while incorporating and keeping the blue tie-in, but really bring out the eyes.

Just my take on the suggestion. ;)

nice experiment. personally i dont care if they resemble real blinds or are something more interpretive and abstract. of course there's a lot you could do to make them more fancy :) ...

I hope that you don't mind if I modified it JD.
My suggestion was something like this:

I was not precise in the description of the gradient.. that's why I had to make it. I originally meant blue to white (not black) following the light angle.

I should be sleeping! =)

That looks pretty cool, but I would change layer blending modes to show the mat board texture through the gradient. That way, it still looks like something physical, and not so much like a Photoshop trick.
...and I never have a problem with someone trying their own ideas on my images. It is fun to see what other people are thinking!
Thanks,
JD
