Hi, on Wednesday afternoon I'm going to be taking some portrait photos of a local band after school. We're using the drama studio there which is a totally black room, with stage lighting on the ceiling. I'll do some outside too if the weather is nice. I know I'll probably need my reflecter disk to bounce light up onto their faces from below to stop any harsh shadows, but I have another problem. They want to wear suits, which are black. How can I make them stand out from the black background and not just blend in? I was also wondering which lens to use. I have a 75-300mm, and a 28-105mm (on the way). The 300mm will blur out the background more I imagine, but I'm not sure if I would need that with a black background. What would you suggest?
Also, any general portrait tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

You might want to use some rim lights. They would be placed behind the subject and pointed up at them. That would create a light outline around them while keeping the background dark. Also a hair light to highlight and outline their hair.

tell them not to wear black, or get into another room without black walls. I think it's ok anyway to blend. Or better still (if they rock)_ get them to take shirts off.
As for equiptment, just go with your onboard flash and you will do fine. I did 250 band images last weekend with just flash and ambient light and most of those are well lit and a-ok.

being a rock band, wanting to wear black suits, ... sounds like they want something other than normal portraits. So, you could get creative...
- Use the colored stage lighting for some shots
- let them blend in, get a picture of their faces that appears to come out of nowwhere
- get some intentionally harsh glares off the guitars
... or just take run of the mill portraits. :) |
