I know this is a wild and wacky idea but maybe for a week just try this out.

Every time you vote on a picture leave a comment if you have something to say about it. But (and this is the biggy) only say what you like about the image. What in it captures your imagination, what did you like, what is done well.

Don't comment on technical mistakes, or missed opportunities - just try and find the things you like. Looking back you might be surprised about what you learn about yourself and your photography.

(and you'll leave some positive comments too)

Doesn't have to be for ever. Not saying don't ever leave negative or constructive critical comments - just wondering if focusing on the joy and exploring what moves you might reflect well on your own creative growth. Who knows. Give it a try - let us know how it goes...

I like that idea, but I benefit the most from honest criticism too. Detailed criticism about what you would do differently is ok by me if it could be offered with a positive spin. That would be nice.

Not so crazy. Worth a try.

I think this is a fantastic idea for the people commenting, but not for the people being commented on.
I've been thinking for a while that I need to lighten up when commenting on pictures, but I do value constructive criticism on my own photos.

Commenting always has more value for the person making the comment than the person being commented on.

Its just a lot of people don't maximise that value.

Although I don't really agree that a weeks worth of positive comments is really bad for the people being commented on either.

It seems to me that if I am able to say about your image "this is what I like: light, texture, angles, point of view, composition, focus whether soft or sharp, and this is what I think you have been able to say to me" then we are both going to benefit. You will know how at least one viewer was affected and I will learn about what images I like and why I like them. I don't think that the word criticism demands a negative...the negative is made clear in what is not said or in how your viewer interprets the image.
This edit for clarity that I support Gordon's suggestion

Gordon, I love your idea! I'm going for it. Now if someone could do my work for me so I'd have more time to vote :)))

My Science picture is not doing anywhere near as well as I expected. The comments it has received are very positive. This is driving me crazy, I want someone to put a comment on giving me an idea why it's not getting the score I think it deserves. I really don't want a week of only positive comments on my photos.

Bob - you're picture's crap, composition is shite and you've wasted your time.

Now - which one is it I wonder?... ;)

Gordon - it's a good idea, but I rarely leave a negative comment without trying to find a positive thing to say anyway. I do think it's better to hear what's not right in a shot as well so that you can fix things.

I agree Gordon. Actually, I always try to stress the positive in photos. I certainly don't go around looking at photos in books and magazines saying "hmmmm ... what would i like to see different". I'm more apt to say "wow! this rocks! How come? Symmetry, colors, etc." I usually take that same approach when voting at DPC.

Absolutely---if there are those who want a more varied critique, they could ask for it.

Bobster ... maybe your pic would have done better if you had concentrated more on the Earth sciences...maybe a natural phenomena :)

I would very much like to comment pictures. But I am so new to the site and to photography that I don't dare to say a thing without the fear that I might be mistaken. I can tell: "I like that picture" or "I don't". Most of the times I don't even know why I like it or why I don't. But I am so very glad that there are people that can comment and let you know what is there that you've done right or wrong. This way you know what is expected from you or from a photo. You was the first one that let a comment on my submission and even your comment wasn't a positive one, I appreciated it very much. My second submission I hope to be a much better one and this will be thanks to you too.

Gordon, I like your idea. I usually try to say what I like about a picture along with what I perceive as "off." My goal is to help others improve, as well as myself. An encouraging word can go a long way.
I'm not so sure I want to only give the positive though. As Bobster said, he'd like to know why his image is scoring lower than he thought. I KNOW that feeling...hehehe. It seems with most of my pictures the commenters vote the highest.
Anyway, I just hope my comments help.

I vote on all aspects of the picture , then when I comment on the picture it is usually always a positive comment, I like I have seen many others comment do not feel that I am experienced enough to call attention to things "I" see wrong, for my perception may be lacking.A biggy to me is the effort that is put into the photo itself, creativity, imagination, technical, and personal perception. And beleve me when I say there are alot of creative minds on this site, thats why I like it so much, great people
