I went to www.roxio.com to download and upgrade my Easy CD Creator to the new version 6.1 and I am shocked by the following price data:

Boxed version (Shipped to your house):
(with mail-in rebates $30.00) $69.95

Downloadable version (You download right then no shipping. Save a TREE):
(with mail-in rebates $10.00) $89.95

What has happened!
It use to be cheaper to save a tree but is this no longer true?
$70 shipped and $90 to download, this is not right!

Has anyone noticed this with other software companies?

Pi$$ed off!

Heck has bandwidth gone up that much!

It's also worth noting that $20 of the $30 boxed version rebate requires you to have already bought a competitive product and be switching over.

Well their product is also listed in there under upgrade/competitor.
You still get the $20.00 rebate if you own a previous copy of ECDC. Then you also get the $10.00 rebate.

That is there upgrade option plan and simple?
They sent me my upgrade email showing the same exact info?

Edit:

Note the wording:

To qualify for the $20 upgrade/competitor mail-in rebate you must be a licensed user of a full retail version of one of the following products: Ahead Nero, Macmillan MusicMatch®, Stomp Click ‘N Burnâ„¢ or Record Now Max, Valusoft® Burn & Goâ„¢, Broderbundâ„¢ Total Burnâ„¢ or Adaptec/Roxio Easy CD Creator, Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD, or Instant Copy

It's possible that the larger rebate on the boxed version is to encourage sales of a product which has already been manufactured, and which will become garbage if not sold/used at least once. When they ordered the hard copies, they may have miscalculated the proportion of boxed vs download sales.

I do not understand it?

I have downloaded my upgrades like this ever since I bought the first version of this product and I do it all the time with others.

I would rather download them than buy them in the store.

Now it appears you are being punsished for downloading it instead of shipping it?

Well the price before rebate is the same. The boxed version would add shipping and (possibly) tax to the price. Something like 40% of rebates are never collected by those eligible; I try to judge the cost by the stated price, not the after-rebate price.

I've found the folks at Roxio to be pretty friendly and helpful. Why don't you call or write them and see if anyone has a more logical explanation?

The point is, it was always cheaper to download the software from their site than to order the boxed version with the manuals.

When you download it costs them less and you are saving a rain forest.

They do not have to package it, and you save them the cost of packaging and printing. The manual is already on the CD.

Now it is just the reverse. With the rebates it is cheaper to ship it than to download it.

Without the rebates they are the same and are offering no cost savings for downloading it.
