Because of the expense of hosting this site, open challenges are being discontinued in order to encourage membership. From now on, there will only be member challenges.

Also, SC members are going to be given a salary for their time.

How many threads do need about this? I think this is the fourth.

.

I would have thought that the upcoming challenges are queue ahead of time (weeks or months) and then automatically posted at rollover times. I guess the site is not that sophisticated?

nah. it just manages over 60000 users and over 410000 images, including the ability to store comments, vote on images, manage portfolios, and deliver prints by mail. it's rudimentary at best. :P

Given all that, I would very much like to see an increase in the membership fee to cover the cost of whatever new hardware is required to see that the server does not tank every rollover. Last night for 40 minutes this box was almost completely locked as far as servicing http requests. A hardware upgrade is in order, or, don't do multiple challenge rollovers simultaneously.

They are, but Langdon forgot this time. I think he picks them several days to a week in advance (sometimes in response to a forum thread or current event).

Yeah, this is a relatively small site compared to others I've worked on.

Last night was a "perfect storm" situation... the site was bogging down for much of the day (maybe due in part to election day traffic). On top of that, we had a large Free Study that just *happened* to fall on the same day as rollover for two popular Open challenges, so we had 1200 images to calculate, plus a higher than usual number of people clicking to see their scoreĂ¢€“ all at a time when Langdon is out of town. That's a highly unusual set of conditions conspiring to take our update buttons away.

Yeah... go out and shoot spotted headgear or headed spotgear or geared spotheads or something...

Put a dalmation on your head...

Put a hat on your dalmation...

The possibilities are limitless!!!

Spots?

"Make like a leopard and show us your spots!"

What spots? Make like a leopard? I don't understand.
