I have just finished voting on the food challenge. Some good stuff there, it looks like some people went to a lot of trouble preparing for their photos.
I feel a lot hungrier now than I was before I started voting for some strange reason :-)

Yes, I'm looking forward to checking out some of the recipes; some really interesting stuff. Mine isn't doing too well, but I bet it's the tastiest. :) |

A lot of great entries - some are really very professional. I could see them gracing food magazines and advertising boards.
Some are less polished and don't pull off that professional style but are still good photos of great looking food.
I wish I could taste it all! (Apart from the baked beans/ chilli dish!)
On the plus side, today I'm being a right fat piggy - I'm meeting a friend in ChinaTown for lunch and other friends in Leicester Square for dinner!
:o)

Shame my shot wasn't a little better than it is... Im pleased with it don't get me wrong but there are some very professional shots in this challenge i have to admit that although not as many entries as I imagined to be honest.
Cant wait to see where I place though whether its from food presentation or photography only time will tell :0) |

Oh man.. I'm about half way through the scoring and have had to stop and fix some breakfast. I'm going nuts looking at these images.
I've given a ton of 9's and 10's. I may have to cycle through again later and modify a few scores, probably upwards..
Seems that when you get this many great images the scoring criteria get different, mentally. I find myself trying VERY hard to score each one as an 'individual' rather than as a comparison to the other images. That's another reason I am taking a break. I need to "objectify" a little. I don't think it's fair to start taking 10's down to 9's just because there are so many 10's.
There are some FANTASTIC shots this time. Wonder if 'Gourmet' magazine has been notified ! LOL !
Let's see what's in the fridge....

I think all of the pictures in this challenge are very well done.
As far as food photography goes, if you knew about some of the tricks used to make food look good, it might make you sick. Like: Frozen lard used in place of ice cream because it melts slower. Lipstick applied to strawberries to make them look ripe. Marbles in the bottom of soup bowls to make the noodles and meat sit on top. Partially cooked meat painted with Liquid Smoke to give the appearance of being browned. Plastic ice cubes (which look more like we think ice should look than real ice). Elmers glue watered down and used in place of milk for cereal shots and other purposes where nice looking milk is required. There are others, but those are the ones that stand out in my mind right now.
Usually, in the studio, pros will usually use two versions of the subject food. the first one (aka stunt double) is used to get the shot set up and will usually sit for a while under the hot modelling lights and get yucky. The second (aka the Hero) will be brought in at the las minute and set in place of the stunt double and the final exposures will be made.
There was a book that came out several years ago that went into some of the details and it's basic point was that using some of these techniques bordered on misrepresentation. I don't know if I agree with that, but it made for an interesting read.

I'm so bummed I didn't get to enter. I have been so busy lately. One of my big passions is gourmet cooking.
I hope they repeat this one again!

I never eat breakfast....after a half hour of scoring I had to go make some ham and eggs!
Nice job to all who entered!
