Actually, "danke schön" is two words, not one! ;) |
Thank you, Franziska, it's been quite a few years since I've spoken or written much in German :)

So far we have:
Wanker =
jerk-off in American English
branleur in French
wickser in German
What about Spanish? Russian? any others?? |
I believe Spanish is pajero. |
No wonder they call the "Mitsubishi Pajero" the "Mitsubishi Montero' in the Americas.
Wanker= Peggy Bundys' maiden name. |
In Japanese, the verb is 'onani/ to masturbate'.
They don't use that as a term of abuse. To call someone a wanker, they might say 'baka yaro'.

Well, it seems to have gone from a borderline troll to something that is, if not constructive, at least innocuous.

So I can relate to David a little. |
Okay, I don't know who to admire more. JMRitz for the brilliant photo that I must admit I didn't get at the time of voting, or Zeuszen, who can assemble a sentence and slam it home like nobody else. If you don't write for a living, you should consider it Zeuszen.
I think this does highlight the difficulty of giving 200+ photos a fair evaluation in what time we can spare.
In any case, you've taught me to look closer and I thank you.

I'm beginning to think I'm too shallow for you guys... ok, I looked closer. I saw the dolphins. I still don't get it. Maybe it's an "art" thing.
As has been said many times before, it's a popular vote - so the cleverer your viewer has to be, the worse you're gonna do. Visually pleasing, technically clean pictures with fairly obvious representations are always going to score higher. By all means go for the intellectual or obscure reference to the challenge, but don't be amazed by your score.
[as for the original picture, it looks like a very dark, blurry picture of a dog to me. I'm not overly surprised to see it at the bottom of the pile - sorry!]
[edit: one day I'll learn to spell Dolphin first time]

ganders,
maybe you're trying too hard. it's not that complicated.
there is a stereotype of a new-agey type of person that believes in crystals, dolphin-assisted healing, vegetarianism, as well as all of the environmentalistic types of philosophies: save the whales, be a vegan, don't cut down the rainforest, etc etc
here is such a person, depicted by their hands, but they are total hypocrites - they purport to believe in all that is natural, yet they smoke, and pop pills. Not only that but maybe they pop pills to actually escape the real reality they say they support.
The fact that they are such a hypocrite is ironic - combining the philosophy of 'pure, natural things' with cancer sticks and prescription drugs.
got it now?
edit: adding this sentence: part of what through people off was, I think the significance of the title. It didn't help make the connection obvious. That isn't good or bad, just that if I submitted such a picture to DPC, I would have prolly hit people over the head by calling it "New Age Tree Hugger Actually Smokes and Pop Pills (not staged or a crop)". LOL.

Speaking of wankers, here is a cartoon that actually uses the word. Quite funny as well. The word is used near the end. Wait for it...
Cartoon with "wanker" (Don't worry, nothing offensive)
It's the fifth part of a cartoon series featuring Bob, a talking egg who loves pie. If you like it, they have an archive of Weebl and Bob animations. Quite funny. Gotta love those Brits!
Have a good one.

What's very interesting is that both of these seem to have Biblical origins; the "scientific" term is onanism, from the story of Onan. It is one of the most misunderstood/misinterpreted story in the Bible, used to justify classing masturbation as a sin. Onan's "sin" was to "spill his seed on the ground" rather than fulfill his duty to impregnate his brother's recently widowed wife and create an heir .... |

So the moral of the story is use a tissue ?
Or is it only okay if you get someone pregnant ?

Yes, I have her stand by the computer every time I use the internet. Before I type anything she has to approve of it. I am very fortunate for being able to get a away with such words, I myself am surprised.
God, why does everyone here associate EVERYTHING with age?? |

ok, I just wanted to put in my opinion here. First off, you keep saying how can someone knock off 9 points for not meeting the challenge. I did not rate this shot, but it probably would have gotten a 1 from me as well. And I wouldn't have to knock off 9 points for not meeting the challenge. I'd only have to knock off 1. Cause I would have only given it a 2 to begin with. |

I've read this forum all the way through and just wanted to add a little bit. I don't know why, maybe it's the meds I'm on. (I just had tonsilectomy earlier today and I'm on some pain medicine. I thought I would be feeling a little worse than I am.) I read this whole forum last night and was kind of confused by why it all has started. I totally agree with vonautsch about this being kind of like an assignment. I have voted down on not being in the challenge, but I rarely have given ones. I probly would have voted that dog picture a 2 or a 3 cause it just isn't techniquecally good either. I think if you look in past challenges that you'll find photos not following the challenge, but people will still vote them a little higher. Some might give ones, but if it is a beautiful photo and everything I think that people might score it average not usually not take of 9 points, but the photo has to be good. The photo of the dog just didn't do anything to the people who gave it a one. I think that you've voted the same way in the past David. There was a challenge in the past with the theme 'Home Sweet Home', I found a photo of the inside of a fridge that 7 people had given a 1, one of which was the author of this thread with this comment "This doesent relate to photography or the challenge much, you just took a photo of food in a fridge, 1" That isn't the only photo that I found that you had given a 1 for not meeting the challenge. So we all have different voting styles and this site is suppose to be fun, so lets just have fun. |

In my best couch-analyst voice:
Are you asking God or us?
Why do you think everything isn't associated with age?
How do you feel about your mother?
More seriously, see my post above and you'll see "everyone" doesn't.
