I'll admit upfront that I'm just starting to research Pentax cameras. (and upper end SLR's) I'm looking to get the K10D in a few months and from what I'm seeing there isn't much of a high mm lens for Pentax cameras. They seem to cut off around 300mm for both Pentax and 3rd party.
I looked through the list here on dp, and Sigma looks to be releasing some in the future?
Why isn't there more of a choice? Why haven't there been high end ones in the past? It just doesn't seem right to me. I have to be missing something... |

| I think if you want really long glass you should look towards Canon and Nikon. |

Michelle,
How long of a lens are you looking for?

Here are some longer lenses (500mm, 600-1000mm). There are Pentax mounts, but I'm not sure if they work with the K100D or K10D cameras.

I'm not entirely sure. I know for awhile 300 would be just fine, but I'm trying to think of in the future when the addiction to lenses kicks in, heh. My dad has a 400 on his Nikon and says he's itching for more.
Any idea why they haven't made many of the larger ones for Pentax? Is it just a low demand, because it's not in the Nikon and Canon battle? |

Pentax has really been concentrating on the consumer market for many years- even in film cameras- and their current lens selection reflects that. However, that is changing. The K10 is Pentax's newest step into a "semi-pro" camera and the rumors are that there is a new Pentax pro model (high FPS, fast focusing etc...) coming out probably in the spring. With the increased numbers of cameras in the higher brackets Pentax is also supposed to be coming out with newer lenses- the 'supersonics' are sweet I got to play with one of the new wide angles about a month ago and was blown away by the quality and the focusing speed.

I have been very happy with my Sigma 50-500mm for my Pentax, not going to get much more than that without teleconverters.
Edit: I have the Pentax *ist-DL....Uses the K mount, as I believe all of the Pentax dSLR's use (could be wrong though).

Yes, they simply haven't marketed the way Canon & Nikon have. They have good products and I did a lot of research before buying my Pentax *iST-DL. Entry level and I've been very happy with it. I inherited a number of Pentax lenses from my father so that made my decision easier.
I had heard I would be limited on lenses. When I checked the internet, I found more than enough lens choices though admittedly, far fewer than those offered by Canon/Nikon.
I was looking for anyone here, in a city of over 1.2 million people, that specializes in Pentax equipment but could not find one. The speciality shops basically said "I haven't seen a Pentax sales rep in years. We really only handle/service Canon & Nikon." So, I can still buy the camera in stores as common as Wolf/Ritz camera, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc, but they basically have no accessories. I'm limited to the reviews on websites and purchasing from the web as well (made a few purchases from Adorama camera as of late).
The lenes in the 400 & 500 mm range are out there, there just aren't going to be as many choices as if you were a Canon/Nikon user as those are the market leaders.

Here are a some various zooms (and one or two fixed) lenses above 300mm for Pentax (K mount links, screw mounts appear to have been available too)

This is just one website. I'm sure there are others and may have more product offerings. Just takes a little bit more digging to find the Pentax mounts over some of the other guys.

I'm always drawn to the underdog for some reason. A few months ago I was thinking of the Sony Alpha, but so many people said the body feels like it's going to break if you turn any knobs. That surprised me a little, because the Sony I have now is built pretty tough. My Sony has even seemed to do fairly well with all the rain and fog here in Oregon. The k10d looks pretty sturdy from the pictures I've seen. I want to get my hands on one! |

I too looked at the Sony's since they purchased Konica/Minolta's SLR unit. I only played with one of the new Sonys at a Circuit City display. Felt fine (not rock solid, but not flimsy in anyway). I have some Minolta lenses that would work with it, but the sticker on the Sony was much higher than what I could afford at the entry level so I was limited to the Canon/Nikon/Pentax kits. Went with Pentax due to current supply of lenses, plus they had a great rebate going. So, we'll see what the future, holds, but so far so good (unless your looking at my challenge scores, lol.).

Good luck with your purchase.
