Okay, I hope this is understandable. I am entering a photo contest that I won last year. Part of the judging is based on "presentation". The frame size is limited to 16x20". Sounds easy, right. Well I have a nack for making things more difficult than they seem.
Last year I entered a photo that was printed at 11x14, I put it in a frame that was 16x20 and matted it. It looked great.
This year I COULD do the same thing, but I don't want to. The photo I have in mind has important details from the far left side to the far right side. We all know that a digital image is not "conventional" size. I usually print at 12x18 for framed work or 16x24 wich in this case wouldn't be legal.
If I do 12x18 the matting would look wierd. It would leave 1" on each side of the 18" side and 2" on the 12" side... get my drift. I do custom build my frames so I could make the frame a 14x20 which would leave a 1" matte all the way around. I think a 1" matte would look wierd.
I suppose my other option is to just build a 12x18" frame and not matte it. I know that the photo should never touch glass, technically it is not musuem quality, but I don't know how much they would deduct for that or if they even would.
so my options are:
12x18 unmatted
12x18 matted into 16x20" frame
12x18 matted into 14x20" frame
what do you guys think? keeping in mind that if I don't win, I'll just blame it on you ;)

Make a 10x15 print...
Cut a mat with a 9.5x14x5 opening for the print...
Outer dimension of the mat should be 14x19.5
this will give you 2" around left/right/top with 2.5" on the bottom for weighting...
