and
Because they are not "DPC type" shots. They're blue, very little in focus, somewhat abstract, and don't tell a story. |

I took a day off work just to hang out in San Francisco and take a few shots. I loved the artwork and quote on this wall, so wanted to capture it. I took one shot, but it was a little boring, then I saw the bicyclist coming and thought some action in the image would help. I boosted the contrast and liked the results, but was pleasantly surprised at how many other people just saw it in my profile and commented on it. |

I liked it. Guess others did too. :) |

Still my highest rating photo *sigh*.
Yes, the butterfly is pretty awesome, but the photograph is SO ordinary.
I tried for ages to get a better shot with a different background, but couldn't - mostly because of the number of people in that butterfly house. |

To me this was just a snap i took looking for landscapes, it's my 2nd highest profile picture with 2 favorites, my 2nd year photo lecturer loves it and sent it to Russia in a gallery exchange programme we did, and it has come up a few times in the "Pick your favorite pic from the person above you" thread.
I just thought it was ok |

This one is the most popular of my entries, though a long way from the top scoring of my images.

Pet shots being such an easy cliche and sentiment, I think I did ok making one that wasn't, but
I really didn't expect any favourites. What I did expect was a little flak for the choices I made, considering the obvious genre. Close to 80 favourites for an uncute b & w pet shot without a pink border, hey, who would have thought?

There were many shots before and after this one that I worked much harder on and/or meant much more to me. This was just a little experiment with lighting and water.
Oh well, I'll take it.

Here's another one that surprised me:
First, I was surprised during the challenge that no one called me on the uneven coloring of the background.
Then, two people named it as favorites. |

Took this one for the threes challenge. Never thought it would break 6.0...

I like the curves in the mane, I didn't think people would like it with the eye cropped off.

Everything you said makes sense except the "blue" part. You saying blue images don't do well?

This one:
Because it's so extremely out-of-the-box. I really liked the way the clouds and lightbeam came out in post-processing, and obviously, some people agreed and it got three favourites and was mentioned in an underrated-thread ;-) |

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But then I went to look at the "Challenge Archives", and noticed that there is a fair bit of blue there. Hmmmm. I can't figure out now why I was thinking that.

This is my highest scoring shot. It seems that it will be on my profile page for VERY long time. I don't even like it.

This one has more views than any other pic I have and it has only been posted for a week now. Blew my mind. |

Definitely this one. I thought it was just 'OK' when I took it.

Originally posted by KarenNfld: This one. Honestly, all I did was point the camera up and take a picture. 1600 ISO and no tripod, no planning at all (although I did take several inside the church). This was in Ottawa and I got home on a Tuesday, looked through my photos and thought yeah this will fit the busy challenge. Got a blue ribbon, 63 favourites and 11,693 views!! It's really not my favourite photo at all.

This is awsome though no matter how you look at it. It is as posted below. Ubber cool. |

Definitely this old one. Still my highest scoring image though one of my very early entries. 43 favourites, which is as many as the rest of my portfolio added together.
When I look at it now, I really hate the editing, but I had a lousy monitor then so I didn't know better. I've improved it since and it's one of my best selling stock images.

When I entered this, I almost pulled it at the last minute. I still get comments on it. It is a favorite of 50 people!! I was and still am surprised to say the least.

I'm glad you didn't pull it. There's something very intriguing about that shot, it's so unreal, and yet there's that very real skirt with the paisley pattern. It's good.
