I recieved several mixed comments on my photo Panic Time including several requests for an explanation. The image is of a paraglider beginning to fall as his shoot or glider folds up during his acrobatics show. He fell briefly before he deployed his reserve shoot and glided safely to the lake below without incident. This photo, including the guy's full flight to safety as well as many of the other photos can be found here. Almost emmediately after the voting begin I wished that I had entered one of the other photos, particularily DSC05046.jpg which was more beautiful and fit the challenge better. I was pumped up about capturing this incident and I let that cloud my judgement in submitting a good photo. I like the photo I submitted quite a bit but without the proper context it isn't nearly as successful. As I said already, the guy is just fine and I apologize if I concerned anyone by the photo.

Great shots Tim, I think you are right.... one or two others would have done better I think. Though I gave you an 8, I think I would have gone with DSC05031 personally. It has that extra bit of WOW factor with the guy freefalling from the paraglider.
Great shots all round though, you have a couple of real winners amongst them.
Keep the good stuff coming.
Cheers,
Todd.

Wow -- that's quite a story! I figured it was some sort of demonstration rather than a real-life reason to be concerned. I'm glad you submitted this one, even if it didn't fare as well as you had hoped. It's quite a dramatic one! |

Was he supposed to land in the water, or was that part of the accident? Just curious.

Many of the competitors either landed in the water or dipped themselves into the water before landing in the water or on the land as part of their stunts but this guy had no choice. His reserve shoot is an actual parachute as apposed to the giant wings or their paragliders so he had no control of where he was going and could only go straight down into the water.

It's called "Pond Swooping". If it's not extreme enough already they add an extra hazard to the mix. Guess some people live on an adrenaline rush and others are there to capture them doing it.
